Hi all,

I have a really strange laptop problem.

The laptop is a acer gemstone 7520 and when I switch it on most the time the screen stays black (Doesnt even allow me to view the bios). The power switch flashes green and I can here the CD drive spin up.

Things I have tried.

  • Booting without battery.
  • Booting with only battery.
  • Different memory modules
  • Different memory slots.
  • CD Drive removed.
  • Boot with harddisk
  • I have also reapplied the chipset and thermal compound and CPU.

Now sometimes I am able to boot and provided I dont move the laptop it will stay on. I was able to wipe windows vista and install Windows 7 no problems. No event event errors and everything about the laptop seemed fine. Now if I moved the laptop it would just switch straight off and next time I try to power it on it would probably just have the flashing green lights again.

Please help Im really confused here!?

Sounds to me like you have either:

A dodgy connection from your screen to the motherboard

or

A dodgy power supply connection to your motherboard

I second this. Try an external monitor to see if it the first one.

I have a 7000 series Acer that does the same thing.. its a common fault of the Acers at the time. (look on the net or e-bay) Its usually the graphics chip, (which in your case might just be on the way out) which might only cost 15 quid to buy but basically no PC repair shops can replace them so you end up having to buy the whole MB which is usually more than the laptop is worth. If you look n You-Tube you will see various methods for cooking the board in the oven which resolders (or reballs) the joints. But this require ability to strip the laptop down. To be honest.. its sell it for spares time...
