Really ticked off with my Q6600 temperatures

I have a Q6600. It is not a G0 stepped chip, so I cannot expect very low temperatures. But I at least thought I would do better than this at 2600MHz, Thermaltake 120 Ultra lapped, Artctic Silver 5 spread w/ one line across the CPU covering the two dies.

Core0 42
Core1 41
Core2 43
Core3 42

When I run Prime95, the temperatures hit the high 50s, if not a 60.

Tried reseating, turning up the fan and everything.

I thought that was about normal for B3 quads...

My G0 stepping can hit 70°c under water at 1.4v...

I think your mistaken, mine can hit 70-75C on 2 cores and high 60s on the over 2 at full load after half an hour....

Thats Q6600 G0 @ 3.3ghz non lapped, line of paste across the cores and a thermaltake BigTyp 120 VX cooler.

I'm a bit annoyed about the cooler to be honest, was hoping for more. I may well purchase the Thermalright ultra 120, with a nice effective fan matched up with a good case fan to see if I can clock further. Might also install 2 92mm intakes at the front.

I heard (on the internetvine) that 60degrees is about where the Q6600 tops out at - am I mistaken?

The maximum recommended external case temp for a B3 is 62C. The core temp is quite a bit higher before it throttles assuming EIST/C1E is enabled. Otherwise the chips internal thermal protection applies, more detail here.

This is my G0 stepping - it's been under 100% load all day and it generally doesn't vary much from the 50-ish mark.

That's a AquaComputer Cuplex Di on the CPU/DDC Pro with Alphacool Reservoir Top/PA120.3 and 1/2" Tygon.

I think the trick is that the room temperature is a stable, dry 18C.

I have to use PC Wizard as CoreTemp won't behave itself with Vista64.

same here - folding all day (100% on all 4 cores 24/7) in a warm room with central heating on and it's around the mid 50's for me to @ 3.15ghz.

Those temps would be typical of a B3 Quad. Those temps are similar to my B3 (I carried out the same remounting of cooler as you describe but to no avail). I had to lap mine. The IHS was extremely concave and that proved to be a problem as there was no direct contact with the cooler more a "pivotal contact". Once lapped the decrease in temps fell by 10c over all four cores. As you have already lapped your heat sink It may be worth lapping your B3.

My B3 FPO was a L701C

Those temps seem fine. Which bios are you running? When I went to the 9xx I noticed the reported temps rose.

If you have Everest, it has system stability test which monitors temps, volts etc. It also shows if your cpu is throttling.

Exactly the same here mate :)

In my experience that's really high for a water-cooled G0. I can literally turn my fans off and just run the pump and I get those sorts of temperatures. Are your fans especially low cfm or something?

From memory my system is very similar to yours - CPU and single graphics card being cooled by a PA120.3. I'm using a Cuplex Di, but I had a FuZion in there before and it was about the same.

Its in a hot room folding constantly whilst running either Crysis or COD4 mate,

Just checked load temps with just folding for half hour and its at about 59/60 something now mate :)

Here's my G0 @ 3.75Ghz running Windows with VMware server. 2x VM with linux 64bit folding with 2x SMP clients... been on for over a week now :D
