hey guys,

was just using my computer, downloading BFV and listening to some music, when all of a sudden my screen went all grey.

The PC was still functioning in the background, but without picture..

I tried turning off the monitor and back on, but then got a message no input detected. And around 15 seconds later the picture came back and said "default Radeon Wattman settings have been restored due to an unexpected system failure"?? :(

Does this sound like a GPU issue?

Any replies greatly appreciated.

Are you actively undervolting/overclocking? If not could just be a random crash of the GPU driver?

thanks for the swift reply Vader. No everything is at stock. And i was doing hardly anything as it happened?

It did say in the bottom corner when the picture came back something to do with a "driver issue"?

possibly windows? now on my taskbar when I hover over the windows icon for the menu, its glitching on the taskbar?

Edit - closed the AMD software icon and the taskbar is fine!

done some OS updates and updated to most recent drivers.

As it turns out, AMD software updated my drivers, but were not the latest, so I did this manually.

But like Vader said, hopefully nothing to worry about. I will just keep an eye on things for a bit first!

Nothing to worry about bud. it's a known issue with multiplane overlay, been battling it for months found out it was only happening with chrome based apps, so discord, spotify, zoom, chrome

Only happens at the desktop, never in game

Temp workaround
Follow this link, download the registry entry to disable it.

guru3d thread of more evidence of that behaviour

Forgot to mention I know you're using an AMD card, the work around works for AMD too. its to do with the optional drivers
Funnily enough, it does not happen on ubuntu only windows. if only i could play MW2, valorant and destiny 2 on ubuntu i would never have to install windows again.

thanks mate, will look at that when I jump on the pc later!

have to lol, I use discord and Spotify all the time, so that’s half the problem then

and yeah, I fired up a quick 10 minute game of Battlefield 5 to see how it went, it ran absolutely awesome and when I quit (I know 10 mins isn’t that long) to get an idea of gaming temps, they seemed to be ok on the 5900x. I was very happy.

No worrys, happy to help. I almost went back to nvidia because of it. was doing my nut in. Working from home, on zoom, "oh hang on a second, yep I can still hear you my display as gone black im not sure if the PC is crashing or not. oh wait its back now sorry about that" I even considered getting a GT 710 and using that as the display card then using the 6800xt as the performance card

Report back when you've had a chance to test it properly. might give others confidence that also have the issue its NOT the hardware.

well. just had it again. :(

been on most of the day and fine..this time though, it rebooted my computer..grey screen for around a minute and then music stopped playing and the computer reset itself. Back top normal now after reboot but man, ANNOYING!

Hope the reg you gave helps! forgot to implent it.

Reason I didnt straight away, is I updated the BIOS, reinstalled windows, and put the lastest drivers frokm AMD on!

Had this exact issue, really hard to find any information online about it but what I have found seems like it's linked to hardware acceleration in chrome based browsers and and a Radeon driver bug. I disabled this and have been crash free since.

It always happened when I was on the desktop doing very little, I don't think it's a major GPU issue you have.

thanks for the input mate.

yeah, both times it happened I was just browsing the internet and listening to Spotify, nothing extreme..
