I have taken my friends hard drive out of his machine and put it into my as non of this USB ports would work, therefore could not use a mouse.

When i boot it up in my computer my USBs wont recongise my mouse in the USB port either, only my keyboard which is ps2 connection.

Then if i go to log into a user name using the keyboard it says do you want to activate windows now. If i click yes it trys to log in and then logs me straight back out!!! Wont let me log in at all!!

Whats the crack??

Sounds like when you switched his HDD into yours, your PC has booted up from this HDD.

As such, windows needs reactivated, as it picks up yuo have had several hardware changes.

The fact your PC is doing ^^, and that it also doesnt pick up USB ports, suggests that its a driver issue with his Windows installation.

Did you ever try logging into his pc in "Safe Mode"???

Sounds like the USB mouse drivers on the Windows install on your friend's PC is a little messed up. Could be worth uninstalling the mouse drivers in Device Manager and let Windows re-install them.

Windows activation uses a series of measures to make sure it's not been cloned and used in lots of different PCs - graphics card, network port configuration, motherboard drivers, so on. Where you've plugged the hard drive containing the install to your motherboard, Windows has recognised enough changes that it needs re-activating. If you re-active it, it will need re-activatig again when your friend puts it back in his PC! If you don't you won't be able to log in when it's hooked up in yours!

Best idea, plug the hard drive straight back in your friend's PC, re-activate Windows if it needs it, then sort out the mouse problem on his PC by using the keyboard to go into Device Manager, uninstalling the USB Mouse and then letting Windows set it back up again.

Thanks for the advice guys but the problem is that i cannot use a mouse or keyboard as there are only USB connections, there are no ps2 connections.

The laser mouse that im using lights up for a short time and then cuts out when the log in screen appears!!! Keyboard does the same, so im stuck at the log in screen.

drumdog you need to do a clean install. You just can't fire a HDD from one machine into another. At best you could try a repair install but I would suggest a clean install.

I have done this before when recovering data from a dead laptop. Just popped it out of the laptop, put it loosely into my old desktop, fired it up and it worked fine, apart from windows activation of course.

Sounds like a driver issue. If you are using vista, uninstall the drivers in device manager- vista is great at finding drivers for you! Why are you doing this though? It wont work as a permanent solution, or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?
