Really worried - Uni.

Hi all,

dont know who to ask at the moment, but.

ive recently developed glandular fever and im pretty much isolated to home. ive rang uni they said get doctors notes in, i have, they cover me for 2 weeks, so they said i will be able to have extensions as a lot of work is due to be handed in around this time. (i may need more doctors notes as they have diagnosed me with glandular fever as before it was just bad fevers and flu symptoms and they now say "Im better when im better"

but. my glandular fever symptoms are getting worse im getting sleepless nights etc, and im worried that uni are going to feel like im getting out of work, i really dont want to fail this year, and i feel that theres a possibility, ive been reassured that everything is fine from my course leader as he says all my work and effort are top notch.

is my best bet to try and get all the work done for as soon as possible, im finding it hard to concentrate with headaches etc.

i dont know what to do! can anybody help me out, anybody been in a similar spot?

Ahh Glandular fever well you might be off for a little longer than 2 weeks. My girlfriend had this last year and had to drop out of uni. She restarted this September. I have every sympathy for you. From what the doctors told my gf you can have it for a month or for a year.

well i aint dropping out, ill get my work done hopefully within a week or two and get it submitted, i just dont wanna drop out.

just go to the doctors and firstly get better! doctors note will allow you to hand in your work much later than anyone else and you will be able to skip exams and either get an estimated mark, or take the exam when some people take resits.

we dont have any exams whatsoever mate, we only have coursework hand ins.

i hate being ill probably worst illness ive had in years.

Easier then if there are no exams. Unis have procedures exactly for these sort of reasons.

You ought to obtain extensions as said. It is understandable that you still may not do as well as you would normally have, but when giving final year marks or something, lecturers will take the illness into account.

I took a few weeks off at Soton following a couple of ops; got extensions but still didn't do as well obv.

they've told me i can still submit the work with the extensions, and i wont be capped whatsoever.

Yes, it won't be capped but what I meant was even when you are ill or recovering, you don't feel like you've done your best.

i understand what you mean, im just trying to get through the work, its a bit of a nightmare theres not much left to do! but getting me down.

Im in a similar boat but I have exams in a weeks time, but i also do labs etc that also contribute marks and ive only just come back to uni after spending 8 weeks with my leg in plaster.

I shall be going in to find my personal tutor tomorrow seen as she is incapable of replying to emails or ringing me up so I can find out what is going to happen.



Hope everything goes ok for you Neoni, glandular fever isnt nice at all.

Having dealt with a similar nightmare situation through the last 18 months, I can relate (and hopefully advise ): First of all, DO NOT STRESS.

Of course this is as difficult as magically getting better, however, stressing will certainly increase your recovery time.

As for the university side of things : you have done all the right things and informed both the course personell and obtained the doctors note. Approach the person responsible for Extenuating Circumstances (usually the head administra for your faculty- if not, your course head will know) and explain the situation.

They will ask you to collate as much corroborative evidence as you have (doctors note, covering letter from yourself and your year head etc) and then submit with an extenuating circumstances form. The form and the evidence will be reviewed by a board of people who will then deem it valid or invalid.

As you have a genuine case and can officially prove that you have been affected, your submission will be deemed valid and it is very likely two things will happen:

1) you will be given a new deadline for the work that you have fallen behind with: the exact date will be decided upon between yourself and your course head/project tutor etc. This effectively gives you the time to recover, and then replace the time you have had off etc. Even though you are technically submitting late, your work will not be penalised in doing so.

2) Your work will be flagged with "atypical performance" notes. Basically meaning that the work produced is not to your highest standard due to issue beyond your control. There is no such things as 'marking leniently' etc in this system, however, come final coursework reviews when people are deciding final grades etc- your AP will be considered i.e. if you are 1% of the next grade boundary etc you may well achieve the higher grade due to your Ext.Cir. Submission. This is no guarantee though of course.



You've done all the right things so far, ignore the 'scaremongering' post above about dropping out. You will be fine

The best way forward is to keep as many relevant people informed as to your progress and speak to someone directly linked to Extenuating Circumstances.

But most of all, get better

Second.

i think i may have sorted it, they said i have to submit a "mitigated circumstances" form, this will get me through to the second year after they have visited the board from hull, this gives me time to submit my work before second year. since they have all supporting doctors forms, and certificates.

Just to update this thread:

Panic over i think ive been given mitigated circumstances by the exam board due to the glandular fever, and have to submit my work before august, i have 3-4 assigments left, so i get to enjoy my summer too!

Work is all in and finished, all passed really well... exam boards in a week, so there gonna obviously tell them the works complete.

And supposebly im on board for a 2-1, which im happy with
