Rear Axel Nut Split Pin Alternative

Thought I'd just share this with folks as an alternative to the split pin used on the rear axel nut (in this case for my 2009 ER-6f).

I was getting a bit fed up of having to straighten out pins and replace them so I had a look around for alternatives.

Some people recommended large 'R' clips but I didn't think they looked very nice when installed. I did like the look of "lynch pins" though so I went ahead and ordered a couple in different sizes.

The smallest I could find (35mm x 4.5mm) seems to be suited best:

The pin itself was 4.5mm which was a little big for the hole in the axel thread. So I filed it down to around 4mm which now fits fine.

This means whenever I need to adjust the chain or remove the wheel I can just whip the lynch pin out and replace it again afterwards. And it doesn't look toooo bad, imo

You could find that someone pinches that as it is so easy to remove.

Nah, the ring is tentioned on the pin and sort of flicks down. Quite tough to undo with your fingers

Just my opinion but I reckon a nice clean R clip looks neater.

To be honest, you don't even really need a clip of any sort on the spindles. If they are torqued up properly they aren't going to undo themselves.

Maybe the R clips I tried were too big. Once inserted it stuck out a good 1-2" :rolleyes:

Hi m8, maybe it looks a bit gash because you have it pushed too far through. R Clips are supposed to secure the item they are fitted to in the middle position, not the end part as you have it fitted.

The spindle should go through the part of the R clip as shown by the arrow below :-

Nah m8, R Clips are always fitted in the middle position. I've never lost one of a bike fitted like that, they just wont come off. Lynch pin doesn't look too bad but as I said, you could go for a cleaner look and not use anything, lots of bikes dont have any clips fitted at all. My RSV has none for example.

Your call though m8, stick with what you are happy with!!. :cool:

No securing device on the spindle nut (if one is supposed to be fitted) is an MOT failure.

Linchpins tend to be found on agricultural machinery, so it's quite fitting on a Kawasaki parallel twin
