Rear Brake Problem

Evening all,

My mate and I had a look at his Mrsss rear drum brakes on her VW Lupo this afternoon.

The OSR is binding. Took the wheel and drum off and it was very dusty inside but nice and dry. Gave it a good clean.

Had a look at the handbrake cable adjustment on the back of the handbrake lever and it's not adjusted evenly. The binding side is actually looser!

Reseated the handbrake adjuster (toothed piece of metal) and put back together and pumped the pedal but it's the same.

Applying the handbrake has very little effect on the OSR. The brake is constantly applied regardless of handbrake position.

The shoes are more worn on the OSR compared to the NSR. Espescially the top half of one shoe on the OSR (top half of shoe nearest the front of the car).

I couldn't seen an easy way to get the shoes off to investigate further. Do replacement shoes come as a complete unit on the Lupo? Do I take the hub nut off and swap the entire thing over?

Any ideas where to go next? I was thinking perhaps the handbrake mechanism within the rear drum isn't doing too much and siezed on?

Haha, that's a cool plate.

Any ideas on the original post? I haven't looked at the car since posting but am thinking of replacing the handbrake cable on that side (one cable per rear wheel which connect to the rear of the handbrake lever).
