Rear door won't open from outside

So I just had my 53 plate VW Golf fail its MOT due to one of the rear doors not opening from the outside.

Apparently this has only this year become an MOT fail issue, so I'm fairly hacked off about it. Can't find anything on google to back this up (in fact all I can find is stuff saying it's only the front doors that must open), but as the garage I went to (Halford's autocentre) said they couldn't actually fix it themselves, and have said they'll do me a retest for free once I get it fixed elsewhere, I can't see why they'd make it up. It's actually more work for them.

So, does anyone have any hints on how to get this door to open? Again, my (admittedly not great) google-fu hasn't found me what I need, most pages are people asking the same question.

Thanks

Section 6.2

Reason for refusal:
a passenger door cannot be opened from outside the vehicle using the relevant control

Front doors have to open from the inside and outside.

Glad my car doesn't have any doors :D

It'll also never fail for any windscreen/washer issues either :D

Just spent a small fortune replacing the rear locks in my 05 Passat.
Looked at some online guides but it's a deceptively large job and I just don't have the skills. Or patience.

Maybe you can find a garage that will just fit it for you if you source a part off eBay.

Door locks on VAG vehicles are a bloody nightmare.

If you have problems deal with it NOW,

Otherwise you are likely to end up in a world of, very serious, hurt! :(

A lot of things are a nightmare on VAG vehicles, dont know how people put up with them.

Just take it to a garage and get it fixed, sound like something is broken, probably the handle mechanism has broken, they are usually made from plastic and can snap overtime.

Had to do a front door lock on a Fabia at work the other day, involved taking the seat out to get the door card off, then smashing the lock to bits to get the door open!

If it does still open from the inside though, it's likely to be a broken or unhooked cable or linkage.
