Rear door won't open

Borrowed a mate's B5.5 Passat and I've just realised that one of the rear doors won't unlock or open.

I don't think it was like that when I took it but either way it's buggered now.
The lock pops up when you try to open it from the inside, but the door won't open. It pops down again when you release the handle.

What's the deal?
 
Just went out to have a look and it opened.
Locked and unlocked about 10 times and only opened twice.
I can hear the motor(?) struggling.

Not my problem, but what's the fix? Door cards out and replace something?
 
More than likely, yeah. Mechanism might be dead. Could try a squirt of lubricant at the clasp though to see if it's just got dirt or something in and is sticking.
 
I had a car once where the rear door wouldn't unlock, turned out with the was a door locking solenoid which cost about £10 off eBay and £10 for someone to fit (door card off, replace part).
