The guy was conducting some research, via a university portal, about a topic close to the community.

Clearly quite a few members here were happy to help them, so why must it be that the community can't decide for itself if it's willing to help.

It was a topic understood by the forums, and one we have a lot of opinion on.

Don't trust the outsiders huh...

Is it just me or is it a touch zealous? Hell, most of us joined this community to get something from it before contributing.

Problem is if you allow stuff like that - it will snowball and no one wants to see the forums full of stuff like marketing surveys and the like even if close in interest to the users here.

Yeh I understand that I guess. This clearly wasn't that end of the spectrum though, it was research via the Cambridge university portal.

I suppose a line has to be drawn... :) Maybe I just like helping people haha.

Joining the community and asking people to contribute to something external to the community without first being involved is taking advantage.

The majority of us joined to take something from the OCUK community but at the same time we contribute. Every issue covered not only benefits the OP but also benefits others who may read the thread so in effect taking from within the community in that way is contributory to the community.
