Can anyone here suggest reasonable (rough) operating temperature ranges for the Intel P4 640 at idle and moderate usage with stock heatsink and fan? (in degrees C).

my pentium D was about 40-45idle and 60 load
Hope this helps

edit: i think the thermal specs for that chip were 60.1 degrees C or something and it ran at that quite a lot without any trouble, 60 degrees was pretty hot though

My socket 478 Pentium 4 3.4 runs at 54C at idle (give or take a bit) but only goes up 5to around 65C so I can't imagine a 775 based chip running much hotter then that.

my 3.4 p4 (cant remeber the number) ran at about 35deg c idle at 4ghz and under load was about 60 under and ac freezer pro 7
