Hi,

Just wondering if any members are in the trade for driveways/dropped kerbs and can give advice weather these quotes are reasonable.

I have had several quotes and to me they are quite steep for the work needed.

Drop Kerbs (5-7 kerb edgings)
Dig both pathway (street) & front garden to required depth
Stone + Tarmac (approx size is 8mx5m)
Remove rubbish.

1 Company mentioned they would need to install a drain as the garden is on a slight slope.

Quotes are around £4.5k

Does this sound a reasonable?

Standard driveways are 75 to 100 a sqm depending on quality of block plus the drop kerb doesn't sound to far from reasonable. Are they handling the local authority permission for the drop kerb? Do you need planning for the drive?

I got a quote to do our drive last week.

Job involved removing old concrete one. Levelling lawn adjacent to extend drive and Remove border hedges. An area about the size of 4 cars.

He came back with 9-10k. I nearly fell off my chair.

No planning permission needed, the companies are handling the road opening notice which I believe is about £170.

The garden is quite small, takeaway the path in the garden and you can just get 1 car in sideways (2 if parked longways but than the frontends will be sticking out onto the public footpath)

My old man used to work for a big utility company doing repairs (pipe, road repairs ect) and thought the price was high considering the materials cost.

£3.5K here for 2 small gardens paved with some sort flags made from recycled materials with block-paving edging blocks.

I'm surprised the council are giving you permission to drop the kerb in that instance. It depends on the council, but I've twice been refused (at different properties) permission to drop the kerb to gain vehicular access. They have minimum measurements and require vehicles to be parked in the direction they drive on, as opposed to parallel to the property.

Council inspector has already being out and measured everything up and said ok. We only wanted 5 kerbs dropping but he said we had to do 7 kerbs to match the new builds in the street

I know what you mean though as when the local council were putting drives in the Council Houses in my area, they refused to do my road as apparently the gardens are not big enough for veichle access. (although if you wanted to pay them £900 at the time they would drop the kerbs & give permission for a drive)

Now as my parents own there house the council want £2.5k just to drop the kerbs.

That including vat? If so not to bad a price. Tarmac ain't cheap these days. I would ask for the quote to be split into larbour and materials and if you can ask for the amount of Man days they have allowed for.

price is not incl vat. Most of the companies say 1/5-2 days. (quite easily done in 1 day tbh)

Tarmac is about £120/40 per tonne around here and about the same for the stone.

Quite annoying as my old man could do all the work (for a couple of beers) but he doesn't have the liability insurance the Council are asking. (not 100% on this but I think it is about £1 million liabilty cover)

No idea on costs or anything, but have you considered the permeable resin based drives, if water is going to be an issue.

Only 1 company has mentioned the drain so I think they were trying to make there quote look better.

That is probally for the work to drop the kerb and any damage to public, could you not ask the cost for them to drop the kerb etc and get your old man to do the rest?

Kimbie

I'll get him to work out the cost if he does the garden seperate.

The cheapest quote just for dropping the kerbs was £2100 incl vat.

Price doesn't look too bad to me, I had mine done last year.

We paid £1150 for the council to drop the kerb, 7 kerbs plus tarmac for 1.5m wide footpath. That was in the North East it probably varies council to council.

The driveway was 45 sq m @ £65 per sq m (Marshall Drivesett Tegula)

Seems to work out at roughly what you have been quoted.

Is a check needed for utilities that may run beneath pavement and any reenforcement work inspection/guarantee that maybe associated -

If the council do it, maybe they take that risk ?

Couple of quotes I got for resin bound stone and tarmac....

Resin bound stone

Area(s)
drive/ front
Path /side
40m2 total

Excavate full area / remove all the waste
Install stone base 50mm
Install concrete base 80mm
Install row of block at the front of the drive 4-2m
Install acco drain at the front of the drive 4-2m

Overlay fully prepared area in resin bound stone

£3400

Same process as above
Excavate / remove all waste
Overlay in 50mm base course of tarmac
Plus 30mm top coat of tarmac
Acco / block at front

£ 2400

Had a rough quote from our local council or around £800 (+VAT) i'm assuming to drop 6 kerbs at the front of my house.

When you get a dropped kerb done they are supposed to reinforce the pavement area suitable for cars going over without making damage to the public footpath. They doesn't always happen though, I've seen them drop kerbs and make it tidy without even touching the whole pavement from the road to the property boundary.

I don't think they would need to dig far enough to interfere with any utilities. Not a clue what it's called but I know people in this trade have a device that they run over where there digging and bleeps near any pipes/cables. They than mark (spray) out which way the pipes/cables are running.

This will be why the liability insurance is high, not only to cover any public accidents but damage to pipework ect.

You do learn a thing or 2 when you go to work with your old man when you were a kid :D

Imo the tarmac price sounds reasonable. Not sure why the council prices for dropped kerbs are so high in Lincolnshire.

At work I estimate £70m2 for a tarmacadam drive way.

So if i was estimating yours ( 8mx5m ) 40m2@ £70 = £2800.

However it could be more or it could be less, without looking at the existing drive way
