Rebuild specs

My trusty X58 xeon system was fatally stuck by a power surge in a lightning storm we had the other week, so im currently speccing up some replacement parts.

Basically its mobo, cpu, gpu thats died but will be getting ram as well
this is what i have so far .. Any thoughts ?

Im a bit undecided on getting a 1070 or 1080 , i game a 1440 btw
i was planning on using my current cooling of 1 x 360 and 1 x 240 rads but im not sure if these 10 series gpu really need it !

Good call , the bundle was one of the reasons for picking that mobo,

Any thoughts on the GPU , id like to use my current rads so would prefer a watercooled gpu
Is there any real difference in performance from one 1080 to the next once they are watercooled and clocked to the same speeds ?
 
I have had my 1070 for a few days, and under heavy gaming my barely reaches 50c and you cant even hear the fans spinning.

The average usage whilst playing was something like 18%.

I am well impressed with it :)
 
Haven't had any issues with heat when testing 1070s or 1080s (except the founders editions), watercooling them though does make them run super cool

Mmmm there does seem to be many brand specific blocks varying quite a lot in price :confused:

I think ill go 1080 if only to add a bit of longevity to the build.

Is there any point going over 16GB on the ram ?
i dont think ive ever used all my current 12gb and other than esthetics is there any real difference in ram brands.
It will be OCd and i recall the X58 had issues when more than 12gb was installed or all the slots were occupied !
 
Ok , well for various reasons ive decided to scrap the skylake idea and go X99,

this is what i have so far.
the GPU will be staying air cooled for now.
