Hey, currently got this setup:

E2180 - cpu
2gb ram
Nvidia 8800GTX - graphics
Corsair 520 HX - power supply
Gigabyte ds3r - motherboard

My problem
Have been having a few problems with it this past year, with problems such as not shutting down properly, and being stupidly slow. Today, i cleaned it out - and my CPU heatsink came loose i noticed. Tried to put it tighter but gave up in the end. Just booted it up anyway.

Booted it up, seemed fine - but then it just cut out after 2 mins. As the clips broke on my old heatsink i put on a new heatsink today and it diddnt turn off after 2 mins but the CPU fan diddnt spin?? So shut it down, and checked the wire was conected to the wire properly. Tried to turn it back on - nothing.

Im guessing my power supply has give up after a year of just turning it off at the wall?

New components
How much am i looking at spending to fix my PC? I want to buy a new hard drive (500GBsh) as i got too much stuff on their which can be backed up. Another new thing I'll want is new case as my old Akasa one sounds like a buzzing hair dryer 24/7.

Does it sound like I need a new power supply?

Sorry for writing so much - saves me making 3/4 different threads. :D

If the heatsink not been working correctly then the CPU will clock its self down as it gets to hot, this may explain the performance issues.

Corsair make reliable psu's so not sure it's that causing the shut down problems.

Hey,

Just remembered i wiped off the old thermal paste and diddnt put any on when i put on the new heatsink. I'm being told this is very bad, is this the reason to why my computer wont even boot up now?

Very possibly. Buy some and reinstall the cooler (which cooler have you got?). Does it POST? Can you access the BIOS? If yes to both then go into the BIOS and check the temperature of your CPU.

No thermal paste is really really bad, the surfaces of the heatsink and cpu are not smooth, they have lots of tiny pits which the paste fills and helps create a better interface between the two.

I have the Freezer Pro 7 aftermarket fan. It was the best one at the time i think....

Is there an obvious reason why the fan doesnt turn on it when the computer is on?
