Hi, I've built a new PC for my dad for Xmas. He wants to give his old one away to a needy cause. His current machine is riddled with malware so really needs a complete rebuild (apart from the fact I need to securely get rid of all his data on it). It originally had Windows XP but came with a free upgrade to Vista (32 bit) which we applied. I really don't want to install XP then reapply the Vista upgrade. I have a copy of Vista (32 bit) to install and plan to use his existing licence code. Looking via Google I get mixed messages on whether this will just work or not. Does anyone have any experience of doing this and can you confirm if it just worked for you ?

I haven't tried it myself but give it a try and see what happens, if it doesn't work it will not let you past the product key part.

once installed make sure SP1 is installed as some PC's in the office here refused to activate when vista was installed till SP1 was installed.

Really is that right ? A 32bit licence is interchangeable with a 64bit one ? The hardware is 64bit enabled.

Just to confirm. Managed to install a vanilla Vista 64 bit OS using the original Vista 32 bit Dell OEM licence number and it validated straight away.
