HISTORY: I recently turned on my PC and heard a loud pop followed by a burning smell. Fortunately the tower didn't burst into flames, but the PC was dead, no power at all. I opened the case and inspected the motherboard and found no sign of blown capacitors or leakages. The light on the motherboard was off. I was hoping that it was only the PSU that had gone so went out and bought a new one. Unfortunately, when the new PSU was connected to the mobo I still had no power and the light on the mobo remained off. I checked the power cables and socket and found them to be working. I now think the motherboard will need to be replaced. It is a Asus A7N8X-E with RAID 0 setup.

QUESTION: I dont want to reinstall Windows XP after replacing the motherboard. If I buy a new motherboard with a different RAID Controller will I be able to rebuild the RAID array or will I need to purchase the same motherboard to be able to rebuild the RAID array?

Thanks for your help in advance.

depends what raid controller you used.

Hardware raid controllers in servers store the raid set info on the disks so they can send it to the raid controller when you plug them in a different machine etc.

I very much doubt if you onboard raid Marvell Yukon jobby will do this though, however its worth a try.

Other option is to buy the same mobo you had an hope it works.

So long as the controller is from the same manufacturer you'll often find that you can migrate your arrays. That's a rather old board though and nVidia's RAID implementation... I'd get a board with the same controller personally. Sure there must be plenty out there.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I have two options really.
1. buy a second hand motherboard with a similar RAID controller as the a7n8x-e
2. buy a new system and get a PCI RAID controller card with the same RAID controller as what is on the a7n8x-e. (this will probably require a XP repair)
