just rebuilt a laptop for a friend, i copied the c:\prog files\itunes folder and the my music one.

do i just install Itunes and then paste the folders over the top?

yeah i had to do this for someone. I just copied all the data back to the same place, installed Itunes and it found them all by itself when it did the initial media scan.

ok so you copied first ? and then installed itunes? if so and it worked i will do that, i was gonna do it the other way.

Yeah i put the data back first after the fresh install then put itunes on and it found them all during its initial sweep for music that it does.

it's the xml files it needs, only done this once (also on a friends pc), MyMusic folder back and install newest itunes

itunes is a joke :p

Possibly not that simple IIRC.

If the old iTunes installation had any purchased music, were the files de-authorised before the machine was reformatted? I ended up getting down to only one licence remaining of the five that a purchased song starts with before I twigged that you're supposed to de-authorise the files before moving them to a new installation.

Not sure if that's still the case, as I gave up using iTunes due to major suckage, but it might still be what happens.

Yeah, you'll have a problem with authorisations if you exceed the limit. Otherwise it's just a matter of copying the files and the XML file. If the files end up in a different location to the previous install, you can change the path which iTunes looks for by holding down Shift when starting iTunes.
