Hi all i'm looking at upgrading my father inlaws PC and was wondering if it was possible to upgrade the CPU. currently its running a celeron cpu at 2.4ghz with a PGA478 socket. i'm pretty sure there are no new cpu's that i can get but is there an older one i could get from fleebay or second hand?

Thanks for any advice

Look at the PCB of the motherboard, then see if there is a maker and model number? then look at the CPU support list for that board.

The CPU you've suggested would be ~10% faster in most applications. Overall your Dad PC rather old and there is a question of whether it really worth upgrading it as even if you put the fastest socket 478 you can get Pentium 4 HT 3.4 it only going to be ~60% faster. This may sound like a lot but a cheap new system would over ~300% improvement

If you do still want to upgrade it then as Stulid said we need to know more about the motherboard. If you don't want to open it up then if you run CPUz it will at least tell us the chipset the board using.
