As the thread says. I love the CIV gen of games but want something new, something on a similar scale but i'd give most things a go... would really love one set in space.

I love Civ too, in case you did not know there's a new version of colonisation comming out, which use's the Civ 4 engine, that was a great civ styled game from the past

Alpha Centauri is set sort of in space (a future planet) while it is a civ style game, it's quite differant in style to civ and some aspects such as diplomacy etc i think are actually far better than they were in the civ games that followed it, you can probably pick it up dirt cheap, the alien crossfire expansion is excellent aswell

Yeah I knew about the new colonization and i've played Alpha Centauri (to death when it was first released :)). Want something new.

Colonisation is still well playable these days. You can download the dos version free and use dosbox to run it. Works perfect. Don't get the windows version, it's nasty.

I can't honestly remember if I played the original colonization or not... since it's free I could give it a go. Anything more recent?

x-com: apocolype, best turn based strategy ever made but dont get too exited you need an old pentium 1/2 to run it + any driver updates may also cause incompatability. i miss that game :(

EDIT: can also run on a pentium 3 with windows 98 installed fresh with no driver updates at all :D got rid of the old p3 now though, only got this crappy quad now :p :p :p hehe

What about something like Medieval 2: Total War + Kingdoms?

Great game, the strategic part is TBS and you can auto-resolve the battles which would otherwise be played in real-time.

It's similar to Civ in the sense that the game is pretty open ie grand campaign, not holding your hand through missions.

I know its not set in space, but still might be worth a look.

The Steam version is reported to work just fine and seamlessly on modern hardware :)

Yeah - I got that already.... I sucked badly at the RTS battles, so I auto resolved as you said - still a great game tho.

If you liked playing MTW but auto resolving the battles you should try Europa Universalis 2 or 3. I prefer 2 personally, but the game is like a much more in depth version of MTW where large nations cant be just swallowed up in one go and with loads of provinces, plus it has the full world map and you have to colonise. EU2 is very historically accurate, while 3 is not. You should be able to find 2 for next to nothing these days.
