Reccomend me an SLR

Hi people,

well my Dad borrowed my Powershot A80 for his trip to india which was perfect for me, fantastic camera. But it got stolen when he borrowed it to take to india with him.

Now im tempted just to get todays standard canon powershot as the A80 was so good.

But....theres always an SLR....reccomend me one. My friend has the D50 and he loves it, for the same sort of pricing though what others can i get?

Which compact is a good one these days then?

Just seen on engadget the new Sony cybershot that looks nice, my Powershot A80 was 4.0 megapixel and the quality was fantastic.
