I've heard things both for and against 7200rpm drives. Some say it decreases loading times, some say it ruins the playstation, all i can suggest is do some research via the art of Google and see what you find.

If you can't be bothered, just buy a 5200rpm drive as they definitely work.

I went for a Western Digital Scorpio 5400rpm. I like WD drives. So far, they've never gone wrong! *touches wood*

Hey

I went for:

160GB Hitachi 2.5" SATA Laptop Drive

Should be great, i am going to get Linux on the go too :)

I also purchased an HDD enclusure to use my current 40gb (ps3 hdd) as a external drive.

Not bad ey? :)

It will also act as a much more compatible media server for non-hd stuff (it can't hack HD as it's GPU is disabled... for now). Also it is then able to read NTFS external drives when booted into linux and well... sometimes it's just nice to have a computer with linux on it in the house.

You running Linux?

Also i know the PS3 takes USB keyboards, but does it take the USB dongle for a wireless keyboard?

thanks

Well, it basicly makes your PS3 a very fast PC.

I will use MSN on it for a start (Linux apps of cause')

unless they've made years of progress in just a few months, then no it most certainly doesnt. linux is dog slow on the ps3, doesnt have access to all the ram, doesnt fully support 3d acelleration (if at all, still)....good luck with linux. when i tried it it was a waste of time.

The only limit on HD size (internal 2.5" SATA) on the PS3 is the size of disks.
320GB is the largest readily available at the moment.
The 500GB drives will be common soon, however you do need to be careful as the first ones to hit market are physically too deep to fit into the PS3.

The difference in performance you get from a 7200rpm drive is nearly nothing - seriously.
However the increased heat from the 7200rpm unit means that the cooling fan will remain almost constantly "on" which will increase noise.
That added to the fact that the 7200rpm units are louder anyway means you will have more noise, more heat and not really be gaining anything.

Really you should only plan on doing the HD upgrade once - so do it right.
If you can afford 160GB now, why not consider waiting a month and getting 250GB?
The 320GB WD Scorpio's are excellent drives - I can highly recommend them.
