For the missus she is after a new Motherboard and CPU

She currently has 2Gb DDR Ram

She uses her pc for music production but now needs to upgrade from her existing 1.2 CPU

Thank you

Lee

Since your existing Ram is DDR it rather limits your choices on the motherboard front. You will still need an AGP or PCI-E graphics card and if you don't have one then you could always get a cheaper CPU to accomodate this fact. :)

(£46.99) £39.99
(£46.99)

(£126.89) £107.99
(£126.89)

AMD 3700+ for £35 and a motherboard for about the same price, and you'll need a cooler.

If shes already working with a 1.2 Ghz CPU it would be the best option for the money. Otherwise you are looking at a C2D system.

cheers everybody so far ... but on this post..

hmm

just realised she is also an IDE - 80 gig hardrive so will need a board that accept ide drives,

she wants it to run fruityloops, cubase, vst's and some other midi apps.

the memory she has is DDR1pc3200 2 sticks of 1024

Any suggestions? might pop down in next 30 mins if i get responce in time

hmm?

Well try make it clear what your after. Your either upgrading trying to use the existing RAM or not. If not then go for C2D and good luck gettting one for £200. Otherwise if your trying to go for the latest CPU and MB with DDR then all the best.

ok, to update, she will buy a sata 80 gig Drive from overclockers too so that would suit the motherboard that was suggested

and yes its an upgrade of Cpu and Motherboard ( no major graphics required, so onboard would suit )

So to clarify,

Motherboard
Processor

that will run the DDR1pc3200 Ram that she already has

p.s and she will buy a SATA HD as i cant see a board that supports IDE

How about you sell the DDR, and get DDR2?:-

OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
(£58.74)

Asus P5B (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£75.19)

Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
(£63.44)

Total : £207.06

forgiv me for my ignorance but im not that uptodate with these due processors,
ie the one you mentioned above is a 1.8, shes going fro ma 1.2, will there bee a dramastic imrpoovement?

or will there be a bigger improovement going for the amd 3700+ with the cheaper 939 board ?

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)

Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC)

slightly over budget, buts its a C2D, 2 gigs of DDR2, and a pretty good cooler.

the cpu should be better then what she currently has, even at stock, but with the mobo, RAM and HSF being of good quality you could probably get a decent overclock ;)

thats my 2p :D

edit: o balls, you would need something graphics card wise:

Asus ATI Radeon X1050/TD 128MB HyperMemory TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
(£25.84)

adding this takes you to- Total : £232.89

a little over budget, but far better than what she has now, and like someone has already said you could proably sell your old ram to recover part of the cost

its got two cores, so while not equalling double, is certainly a lot better than a single 1.x ;)

The G/MHz wars ended, i.e. basically Intel's new C2D are reworked from ground up meaning their (bloody) faster, whilst efficient & not to mention Dual-Core which is basically 2 processors in 1 :)

I'd go with semi-pro waster spec. Will be waaaaay faster than current setup & even a AMD 3700+ (compare here). Mobo accepts both AGP & PCI-E graphics card & DDR1 RAM so you can use current sticks.

Recommend she invests in a bigger (SATA) hard disk when she can. Buying 80Gb doesn't make 'economic' sense, i.e. £/GB. The current HD will work fine with semi's spec :)

hmm ive never overclockd anyhting mate, is this done in the bios ?

also im interested in doing my machine now uve said that

p.s is it possible to overclock graphics cards ?

have you got a link to the stock fan you are tlaking about? if i get that what will be the difference? as i ashume if i overclock the cpu will get hotter, and would have thought a better fan would be required ?

p.s is the graphics overclocking done in bios too ?
