Hi guys,

I am after a recommendation for an air con specialist. I think the gas level in my car has dropped below the threshold as the compressor isn't engaging.

As it says over there

I am in Bristol, don't mind travelling a little bit though.

What should I expect to pay for a decent person to discharge and re-gas my system?

I checked one person in my area and it was £120.

 F me!

I paid £55 for a mobile one, Bham area for the Integra.

Look harder. :p
yell.com only lists 14 entries, some of those are duplicates. I'll keep looking.

I have just been out fiddling under the bonnet and pressing the valve in causes lots of ahem, air, to shoot out of the system, also some bright green liquid. It seems high pressure, but would only a couple of psi also come rushing out?

I found these very good when i had mine done on the mondeo, although it cost around £60
Cheers.

I think I will stick a multimeter across the compressor plug before getting anyone to look at it.

EDIT- Would the above actually work? If the meter is showing 12v then that would mean the compressor is dead?

There's one just up the road from me, near Focus/B&Q. My mate used them and said they were good.

I've used a place in St. George, on Church Road, charged me £50 to regas the MR2.

Cheers mate.

I havn't forgotten your TV, should be able to pop up this week. :D

Whilst there is still refrigerant in there, it may have dropped below the required pressure level.

Have a look on the a/c condenser (radiator at front), and see if there's an electrical connector going into it, if there is, then this is probably a pressure switch. Unplug it, and with the engine running (and a/c switched on inside), bridge the two pins together - the compressor should kick in and start running.

If it does, then it just means you've lost refrigerant, and it just needs topping up.

How often do you use A/C? If you don't use it regularly, then consider leaving it on more often (even in winter), as it keeps everything sealed and lubricated, and helps prevent further issues in the future.

I use it constantly, leave it on all of the time.

I think the pressure sensor is on the top of the accumulator, i shorted this out with no joy. Or, do I have the wrong sensor?

It could well be - but I know that on my Prelude it's on the condenser :)

A service manual (if one's available) will help for finding it ;) By bridging out the pressure switch, it eliminates the amount of refrigerant in the system as a problem, and will allow you to try to trace other things :)

In my Haynes the connector I shorted is called "pressure cycling switch - low pressure side".

There is also a, "pressure regulating switch - high pressure side". I didn't touch this one though.

Right, tested the multiplug that attached to the compressor.

0v when AC is off (as expected).

13.6V when the AC is on.

Looks as if the compressor is knackered. Perhaps it's just the electromagnetic component that engages the clutch. Do you know if this component can be changed individually?

Been out under the car today as I found out that there is a common fix of removing a washer from between the compressor clutch and pulley.

Slackened the aux. drive belt off and after a lot of faffing around managed to take the clutch plate off of the AC compressor pulley.

Took this washer out and then put it all back together.

And... It now works.

the AC compressor still cycles on/off in the following pattern,

ON : 2-3 Seconds : OFF : 7-8 Seconds: ON : and so on...

I have been informed that this is normal?

Can anybody else with a Mk2 Mondeo which still has working AC confirm?

You can usually hear the clutch engage and disengage, kind of a clicking noise.

Thanks,

Chris

quick fit were cheap for a re gass, plus they guarentied it would be colder once done or your money back, it cost me 62 quid and works better now than it did from new
