So I've just impulsed bought a Dell 25" 1440p U2515H monitor. I am well aware that my current GPU won't be able to make the most of it. I am currently running a single gtx760.

Taking into account price and what cards are coming soon (next 6 months) what do people suggest? Another 760 for SLI or wait for 380x, or buy a 970/980?

Don't go sli 760's you'll run out of vram instantly. Wait it out a tad and see what happens with these new cards popping up.

I'd say it largely depends on your budget - you could pick up a 2nd hand 980 for sub-£400 or alternatively a nice 970 or or one of the 780Ti's currently on pre-order for sub-£300.

Personally I've just gone for a KFA2 GTX970 and I hope to be gaming at 1440p.

I dont think the 970 is a good choice at 1440p - I sent mine back due to the VRAM issue and because I intended to use the card to power a yet to be purchased 1440P monitor

Something with a full fat 4GB of VRAM would be the bare minimum but even then I would want more VRAM as future and some current titles are going to max 4GB out at 1440P

For 1440p i'd go with an R9 290X. If you wait a few months the 390X should be coming. A 980 would also handle 1440p fine but it is a bit more pricey than a 290X.

I've seen arguments for and against a 970 for gaming at 1440p but for me I'm hoping it will suffice as I'm not prepared to spend circa £400 for a 980 tbh!

I suppose I was the opposite and wasn't willing to take the risk, I got lucky and got a 290X off the market place but have held off on the new monitor so far

I think for 1440p ~£450 on a 980 would be a better investment than ~£300 on a 970, with a modest overclock you’ll get considerably longer before you need to compromise on settings and think about an upgrade. I’d also guess the 980’s will hold their value long term better.

Not to say a single 970 can't handle 1440p, just for me the 'value for money' option would be the more expensive card in this case.

I'm going to hopefully hold out and see what AMD serve up in the next few months. I really want them to bring the fight to Nvidia so we don't end up with a consumer-choice-destroying monopoly.

I think the 970 is a nogo then from what people have said, along with Nvidia's shoddy false advertising and business practices.

As others have said dont go SLI 760s. I switched to 1440p not to long ago when I had SLI 660s and almost immediately vram was an issue. I'm now on a single 970 and have no issues, as of yet I haven't come across anything I can't max, but then I do have a gsync monitor so have no issues dropping to the 40ish fps mark.

Cheap 290x until the ti/3xx come out and price points get refreshed for whatever your budget is.

No harm in trying the 970 and see how it handles your games. May not need to buy anything if you play civ 2 or something

£200 r9 290

£300 r9 280 cf

£400 r9 290 cf

£450 gtx980

£500 gtx970 sli

Those are my recommendations for set ups that will handle 1440 easily. Personally I'd be looking at either a pair of 280's or 290's :)

Not a great time to get a 980 imo. With the new NVIDIA and AMD cards due to come soon the 980 will probably get a price drop.

I'd recommend a GTX 780 Ti or a GTX 970 for around £250. Having a 7970 3GB and a 2560x1440 monitor, I can tell you from experience that whilst more VRAM would be beneficial to have a safe buffer, I pretty much never run out of memory and the only issue at this resolution would be raw GPU power - which both the 780 Ti and 970 would provide you with.

I use a 970 on 1440p and it handles everything I play fine, although I don't play many intensive SP games that people have reported the issues with.

I am tempted with the Titan X though :D

But at 250 quid you can get a 290x which has more raw GPU power and the vram over both of those cards?

I'd recommend a 290x if you have to buy now. Otherwise, wait for the 390x and see what effect that has on the prices of other high end cards, and hopefully grab yourself a bargain.
