Reccomended RAM for running Vista

Hi Guys,

Was just wondering how much RAM you guys would reccomend for Vista.

With Aero et al the newbies included...

I'm on 1GB, but I've took off the side bar and am running it as Classic Windows skin (i like it better this way heh) and it's running far more efficiently than Vista skin etc.

With it being more efficient, obviously it could be a little bit quicker at accessing programs, would you reccomend I go for just 512 more, or go all out for a 1gb stick again?

Also - if you can read my mind, as I'm god-awful at explaining things, and tell me more than I've asked for, that'd be great :)

Thanks,

Rich

Above 1GB you'll get more of a performance hit with dual channel ram if your mobo supports it. Check if it does and match up the ram if yes.

Can you fit in a second hard disk there? Any cheap 80Gig will do. Use that to store pagefile and temp files. Set all environment vars to point to the second disk.

There are some good tweaking guides out there to turn off unecessary services. They will consume ram at the start so it's advisable to disable the ones you do not need.

One particular slow down is indexing. Unless you have thousands of documents you regularily search for turn it off as it is a waste of space. Another disk feature to turn off is the timestamping of when a file was last accessed (not written to but read).

Google for Optimize Vista.

TweakVI is a decent app.

I have it running fine on 1.5 gig with aero (but no side bar, not because it slowed anything but because I had no need for it).

However if you are going to upgrade I would go for at least an extra 1gig as it will future proof you at least a few months longer.
