Over the past month ive noticed poor performance from my pc. I'm not used to high FPS by any means, nor one of those peopel who always want 70 fps or above, but i've been playign both gtr evolution, and dirt today and noticed reallly poor performance .

ON dirt i was playing with all settings maxed out, except aa which is at 2x .. and playing at 1280x1024

I have a 512mb 4850
e2180 @ 2.8ghz
4gb ram
2x IDE hard drives, the main with 23 gb free of 180gb

Duringan offlien race with multiple cards the framerate never went above 40, and went as low as 9, sitting around 25fps...

I havnt measured the FPS in gtr but they're also very poor....

I have noticed poor framrates for a while, and the only things thta have changed is that 1: i have installed dirt, which took up a fair portion of the hard drive.
2: i have been getting overheat messages on my graphics card, saying the temp is above 81C (when i have been gaming for quite a while)...

all my other temps are very low

your help would be apprectiated..

have you run defrag lately? if not download auslogics defrag (its free and much better than windows own, faster too) and run that, should help with overall system performance though I wouldnt expect it to cause low FPS but you never know
80 isnt too bad for gfx, they run a lot warmer than CPUs

check the fan speed, then manually adjust it so it gets significantly faster and most likely louder and see if it solves the overheating issue. use catalyst control center

i'm not bothered about the overheating issue... but if i can prove that overheating reduces framrates then i can send it back..

i havnt run defrag recently no.. just a new install last summer

just upped the fan speed, ran game again for a couple of mins, exactly the same frame rates....

- Hmm methinks i'l download it and see if it makes a diffy .. can an undefragged hdd cause say slow boot up times?

:P ok.. ive just run it.. but it says it only defragemted it by 3.5% or something.. is that becuase its been so clogged up for so long? - can i do this again and expect it to improve upon that?... - just going to try Dirt again

- Ran it, no improvement.. However a big improvement when openign my computer- it loads up with no lag

- Not much, or any really noticeable improvement in booting up...
- I'm wuite impressed with the speed of file navigation now, i always just got the impression the more files you had the slower it would be :P .. thanks a lot regardless of the fps, this seems to have helped my hard drives a lot

- Now we've ruled out the hard drives, they're doing fine now (unless anyone can tell me other wise).. i'l run css, something that should run with very high fps, and have a look... once again thankyou for everyones help

- just ran css FPS hang round 60 ... occasionally going down to mid 30's for a fraction of a second.... - Does this seem low to you? ( it seems low to me, esp since its such an un demandign game)....

Tried installing the latest graphics drivers?

Also check in task manager to make sure there's not a rogue process using loads of your CPU.

as he says try reinstalling latest gfx drivers
first uninstall old ones fully
uninstall using add/remove program
reboot into safe mode, run driversweeper and ccleaner (registry fix)
reboot and install new driver
see if that helps
