Vista is far more mature at launch than any other previous MS operating system, things are due to get far far better.
I think a lot has changed in 5 years though. Previous Windows launches came at a time when there were far less enthusiasts or 'savvy' types around, things like trying beta drivers/software or running benchmarks were the domain of the geek. Whereas now with all the storm around Vista some people may be getting a shade concerned, given that it is so close to lauch. Last year I never really paid much attention, but to be fair we are now less than 2 weeks from launch date and you would think by now hardware vendors would have had plenty of time to sort out a decent set of drivers, especially given the long lead time since RCs were made available.
Personally I thought XP was pretty damn good at launch. You could just use win2k drivers for most things which didn't have an XP specific driver (Logitech being a notable exception). And don't forget that it shipped with dx8.1 out of the box, which was pretty mature for the time.
