Recently slow network speeds - reason?

Hi all,

I've been a VM subscriber since 2010 and moved on to the higher BB tariff a couple of years ago. I have a SuperHub (Netgear) 1 with a WDNA3200 (Netgear) wi-fi adaptor that the engineer gave me.

Since it was installed I've had fast speeds:
  • Wired laptop: 148-155Mbps
  • Wireless laptop: 70-98Mbps
  • Wireless Desktop: 70-115Mbps
  • Galaxy S5 always +45Mbps

Now since the past couple of weeks I've noticed a drastic change in the speed on the desktop, whilst the laptop is still getting the above wireless speeds (70-98Mbps) the wiresless desktop is running slow at around 10Mbps DL and 1Mbps UL.

I haven't changed anything for this to happen. I've tried unplugging/turning off all other devices to see if range improved, but this has had no positive affect.

I went out and bought some BT Powerline adaptors rated at 500Mbps, but this only increases it to about 34Mbps, so that's going straight back!

I've fixed the channel at 11, selected 144Mbps (as opposed to 300Mbps), and gone from 5Ghz back to 2.4Ghz. This has improved the Wi-Fi on the desktop and to around the same as the powerline setup, 35Mbps.

The signal strength indicator on the desktop shows 4 bars out of 5.

Any ideas what's caused this and how to improve my network speed?

I was looking at getting a better Wireless adaptor, saw an Asus one that uses the ethernet socket on pc, Asus Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. The shpeal suggests it increases speed and range due to shape and stuff etc.

I'm going to try a few DIY hacks see if that helps in the meantime.

It could easily be a software/driver problem.

  • Try temporarily disabling any third-party security software.
  • Try the PC in safe mode.
  • Try the PC with a Linux Live CD/DVD.

144mbps wifi connection will give you around 75mb of throughput.
300 will give you about 100-130mbps.

I know, but for some odd reason, when I set to 300Mbps I get slower speeds....

Yeah same here. Generally lower set speed and frequency equals better wave propagation. Setting higher speeds is only useful if I'm in the same room with ideal reception. A single wall and a solid 300mb signal gets reduced to 150. I have a Superhub 1 also.
