Anyone have any experience of battery/rechargable lawn mowers for reasonable sized lawns? eg: A hundred+ square meters?

I use a makita 430mm wide for about 250 Square metres and its good. Would never consider petrol (more effort, storage of petrol, etc)

For mine you do need to really have 2*5 amp hour batteries and ideally a couple spare though. I do tend to leave the grass long though.

It helps if you already have diy tools with the same batteries (or an adaptor costs about£20)

Yes my grass isn't in great nick but that's not really to do with the lawnmower

I have the same as Buffman, my front and back about the same area as well.

No issues with it, though if I leave it a bit long it can get bogged down in a couple of areas but has some very thick grass, but other than that so much easier than dragging a cable around, never had a petrol mower.

I can normally do the lot on 2 x 5ah batteries, but then also have a number of 3ah as I have a bunch of cordless Makita stuff as well

If you want a really good and reasonably priced petrol mower, have a look at the 16" honda IZY. I wouldn't bother with the self propelled as they are so light

With cheap petrol rotary mowers abounding that work very well even when taxed for none stop hours on very big lawns, to me it's a no brainer to choose petrol over some underpowered battery operated one. The replacement battery can be either ridiculously expensive or plain obsolete in a few years.

A 3 HP rotary petrol mower is light and easy for a woman to start, a 3 HP battery one? Do they even exist?

I thought this article I found just now whilst looking for power and torque figures for battery mowers was excellent:

Electric ones don't have the same power as petrol that's for sure, but they do generally have enough power to cut a normal gardens grass no problem.

Then there's all the benefits of not having to deal with petrol, oil changes and general maintenance of an engine. That's before you get into the environmental concerns of small petrol engines.

I've got a robot mower myself and i can't praise that highly enough but i appreciate they're in a different price bracket.

Aye only time an electric will have issue is when you're trying to mow thick wet grass

Electric lawnmowers also are a lot less noisy, your neighbours will thank you! :D

I suppose an extreme environmentalist wouldn't mow grass at all :)

Switched out or old petrol mower for a battery one a while back now and much prefer it, already had compatible batteries from power tools and the mower cost was very low on sale. From a perspective of a person who keeps the lawn a reasonable length all year round it hasn't been better or worse for cutting, but it is much quieter
, less smelly, and pretty much maintenance free. :)
