I hate networking - it perplexes me! Is it possible to set up a "reciever" in my office to connect to my wireless router downstairs allowing my to connect my spare laptop, nas unit and other bits via wireed connection?

At the moment the setup is:

Cable Modem (virgin)
--> Wireless router
--> 2 Laptops (wireless)
--> PS3 (Wired)

And i want to add
--> Reciever (wireless)
--> Workstation (wired)
--> Old laptop (wired)
--> NAS (wired)

How would a PCI wireless adapter help me achieve what im after?

I'm not afraid of opening PC's - been building them for years but never really embraced networking more than connecting to the internet!

Ah sorry I totally misread your original post :)

TBH the best way would be a home plug system to link your office to your router downstairs and then just put a cheap ethernet switch on the end of that.

Or a wireless bridge would connect to your existing wifi network and then into a switch.

Going from what OcUK stock:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...e=Netgear GS605 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch

Another option would be a Linksys WRT54GL running in wireless bridge mode with tomato firmware, will require a little bit of setting up but would be a cheaper option, though the link to the main router will be dependent on your wireless speed so may be something to consider if you want to stream media from your NAS to your PS3.

IIRC one option would be a cheap cable router such as the Linksys WRT54GL which with the right firmware should allow you to turn of it's routing and turn it into a wireless bridge with 4 ports (I'm fairly sure it's an option with the Tomato and Svensoft talisman firmwares).

[edit]wij already mentioned that

I'll take a look at the WRT54GL (i think i lent one to dad not long ago...might pinch it back)

Thanks for the help chaps.

P.S - Werewolf - i sent you an email yesterday, did it arrive?

Definitely the WRT54GL route. I use DD-WRT v24-sp2 rather than tomato, as I understand that Tomato has less features on the bridged mode. Run in client bridge or repeater bridge mode. I have this setup myself and it works great. Bear in mind that the main router downstairs wants to be a linux based router, as the dev team for DD-WRT haven't fixed DHCP passthrough quite yet on the bridge modes... If the main router is running linux, it all works well.

See here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge

The main router is a Netgear WRG614 v9 running standard firmware connected to the virgin cable modem - i'm also using WPA security on it as thats the highest level supported by both laptops connected to it.

Is this suited to use with the WRT54GL???

That router does support dd-wrt itself, according to their wiki but only the micro version. I don't believe the netgear firmware is linux based itself, though, as I have the v6 of the same model and I didn't have passthrough.

There are builds of dd-wrt which do actually allow passthrough, however there are other problems associated (currently I cannot access the other computers connected to the downstairs router - well the windows based ones at least!). It should hopefully be fixed soon though, as the dev team are aware of it.
