I always like to read something new. So how about people chuck ideas in here for books/series of books for people to read. Try and think of slightly lesser known books though as most of us will probably have read/heard of the big authors.

My offering;

Erast Fandorin series - Boris Akunin

Fantastic series of books! Think Tolstoy does Bond/Holmes. Amazing characterisation, great plots, a varied and unique writing style and genuinely fun and engaging read. Just published the 7th (I think) in the series with a few more to go as they are translated from Russian.

Now you guys go! :)

Dan Simmons - Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, Rise of Endymion.

Im having to wait to get my copy of the last 2 in omnibus form and the wait is killing me. Just finished the Hyperion Omnibus and was blow away.

Great characterisation I found myself empethising with them throughout the whole book genuinely rooting for some characters and hating others. Varied writing style with hard sci fic, poetry, mythology, religion that is all tied together and is both fantastically complex but well thought through.

George RR Martin's Fire and Ice series starting with Game of Thrones. It's fantasy but done in a dark fashion. Five great houses and their lower lords and knights, all vying with dirty politics, war and murder to advance their power. Once you get your head around who is related to who and who rules where, you really start to appreciate the detail he goes into.

Edit - Just re-read the OP. This probably falls under the well known category now after the tv series.

I don't know much about literature, and what counts as lesser known, but non fiction wise I really liked 'Agincourt' (Barker), and 'D-Day' (Beevor). I didn't expect to enjoy, or even finish them when I started, but found them both fascinating and entertaining.

Fiction wise, I like Pratchett and Vonnegut books especially, but I suppose they aren't really 'lesser known'. I just read 'A game of thrones' and that was great, but again, not really 'lesser known'. The 'Sharpe' series was fun, and that seems to be about all I can think of atm.:o
