recomend me a CHEAP car please

Why is he likely to buy things when he is stating for the next 2 years he needs to sort himself out? He is trying to make a positive step financially.

You are not getting me.

How many times have people said I need to save money blah blah blah then 6 months later they spend loads on a car, or loads buying a new car or this or that.

You're making an arguement out of nothing. I included the term 'modding' just in case, his best friend may crash a 182 and offer him a brand new something or other for £10 so is he going to say no.

The term modding was there simply to cover IF he decides to mod.

Keeping his car and spending more on alloys, tyres and insurance is not a step in the same direction.

So he should stop replacing worn tyres and paying insurance? See we can all twist words to make arguements...

Eh? I'm not twisting anything you are saying. Including modding in your expected expenditure when you know you are trying to save money is stupid.
He wants to get rid of the clio, not keep it and maybe look at modding it.

Definitely a 306 DTurbo. I run one day to day, it takes a lot of abuse, and is actually quite fun (in a weird I don't care about this car way :D). I admit I only get just over 40mpg from it, but I don't exactly drive it economically, with some care I could probably get it over 45mpg without too much hassle.

When this one dies, I shall replace it with another one, or something very similar.

It wasn't expected expenditure but factors in the costs to do with the car for a year.

Say he sells an exhaust, Modding is then up money.

I value everyones oppionion

I am in the process of buying a place, been looking over the past year, now, with that in mind, I am trying to save money so i can get a mprtgage, and keep up the monthly repayments, my wage isnt all that high, i dont have a lot of money, so i have to make sacrifices

Morba, you are right though

i wont be modding the car, hell, i havent even modded the sport! i have to stop spending, i certainly wont be moddeding any car soon!

the way i see it, is if i can save £500 a year, surely thats got to be worth saving? at least i can use that money to put aside for a rainy day or towards a weekend car perhaps, who knows

Also FWIW do not feel down hearted about having to downgrade to save just that little bit of money. For some, their pride in their car or their drinking/smoking/social habits etc out weighs the desire to live more comfortably. If you're looking at buying a home, you need as much money as possible, and you being willing to make sacrifices is a good thing, don't let anyone tell you "it's not worth it for £xyz" that's your call to make :)

Oh and i looked into the 306 D , and what i found is rather odd, the 2.0 D costs less in tax (after 2001) and better on fuel than the 1.9 D (mon turbo)

How is that in any way odd?

The 2.0 is a HDi direct injection engine, the 1.9 is an oldskool mechanical injection engine. The 2.0 is therefore a newer and more efficient engine.

It costs less to tax because all cars registered after 1st March 2001 (Except low volume stuff, imports etc) are taxed based on CO2 emissions not engine size.

There are also far easier and less degrading ways of earning a paltry £500.

I'd rather not have the reminder of the fact that I was desperate for £500 every time I get in my (crap) car.

I assume the degredation would be that of his own image and status symbol, which evidently he doesn't have? Maybe hes doesn't require a flash-ish car for self-gratification?

What exactly is easier than selling a depreciating asset for money?

But he's not though is he - he's replacing it with another asset for about the same money, hoping to make the savings he requires in running costs. This is a slow process thats often counter productive - as his years savings are wiped out if the car has a particularly bad session at the MOT tester, or something.

The only method here that makes sense is to sell his car for £3000 and purchase something for less than £1000. That way he makes the savings on running costs and banks £2000 - between 2 and 4 YEARS worth of savings should he replaced it with a cheaper car of the same value.

Its good to see that the advice you close with is appearing frequently, however Im sure you can see the primary point my post was raising the 'image' card. The closing question I made is still fairly relevant as I can not see anything easier, assuming the OP follows the advice offered in this thread, than selling what you have.

i am looking at all the advice given, although i would love to keep the car becuase its quick looks lovely etc etc, but the main question i have to ask is simple, Can I afford it?
