Heya,

Im looking to get a new laptop, i need a small light thin one, similar to the sony vaio (or a vaio itself).

Ruff specs

AMD Athlon 2600-3200
512mb ram
40/80GB HD
etc

Any make, Sony prefered.

Just recomend me a model, and give the ruff price.

I dont want to spend more than £600 really

Thanks

Dave

I would recommend against getting a sony laptop, they are good for support in warranty, but when it runs out it is hard to get ahold of parts if things go wrong (Sony only repair laptop's themselves, so do not sell to other companies afaik), and they charge you astronomical prices to have it repaired by them.

ACER AS5622WLMI - £599 from a high street retailers website.
Basic specs are:
T2300
1GB RAM
15.4" Widescreen
80 GB Hard Disk
512MB ATI1300

I really dont think you will find much better at the price point IMO.

Also I dont believe Sony make any AMD based laptops, and their prices are around 100 quid above your budget for the base models IIRC.

Small and light actually costs more than big and heavy...

quite a few people will tell you bad things about acer laptops but I've had My Acer 1682 for over a year now and it still performs well.(cost about £600 at the time)

I'd say whats been suggested already is pretty good for the money. Sony laptops are very good looking but you pay a premium for them and I don't think your £600 budget would get you much Sony. That is unless you can find a clearance model based on the older Pentium-M.

thats not bad for the price at all wont find much better unless you look on the bay for that price

I have an acer 5622 and its a little belter for the money..I paid just under 700 quid for it a few weeks ago so at 600 quid its a steal..curse these falling prices

I would look at Acer 3xxx range.
Wouldn't buy a Dell, if anything goes wrong (ie DOE) it'll require you to take court action to get refund/replacement.

Do you have any further information on that? Or is it just something one person had happen to them and moaned about on the net so therefore becomes "the norm" as far as some are concerned?
After using Dell for a number of years as a source of business PCs and more recently for a home purchase, I have found the service nothing but superb and find it hard to believe that there is more than a handful of isolated exceptions to this on past experiences.
Its very easy to hear one bad thing and assume thats the standard practise especially if you dont have any first hand dealings with the company in question.
All companies big and small have their odd bad days which people are only too happy to quote as being the way it is, what you dont hear from is the other 10,000 people who bought the same machine who have no issues with service.

Have to say, I do agree. If numorous people were to say to avoid someone then i probley would try and avoid them, however, dont always listen to what one person says. There a massive company, sometimes people will have a bad experience with it. Sometimes you just gotta ignore some bad experiences.

Experience is from a close friend in the IT department, with a company contract with Dell. After a medium sized order, half of them dead/faulty on delivery, Dell refused to replace them (said nothing wrong with them, they were faulty) The company had to take them to court. Call centre were useless as well. Pretty much put me off Dell for life.
