Currently don't have a Jacket

I wear layers of Jerseys and a Altura Night Vision soft Shell over the top

I have a rain jacket, but its a bit small on me

Thinking about buying an actual cycling Jacket to wear all over winter, either as part of my soft shell or not sue it with that (if its warmer)

so do I get a jacket that's really thin , designed as a "rain" jacket
or
do I get a ticker one which would be good a rain Jacket as well as keeping me warm ?

local bike shop (where I have money to spend) doesn't offer a lot of choice...

They do Endura, Altura, Funkier and Casteli

sooooo tempted to get the Altura Night Vision EVO
but then noticed the Funkier Full TPU Windproof & Waterproof Jacket which feels lovely and thick !

so im not sure what I want now, can anyone help me please ?

Thanks

If it's only one jacket, then there can only be one: the Classic Softshell.

Spend the money in the bike shop on something else.

your link doesn't work
so I am assuming its the Rapha classic ? :p

Or I can change the title to "recommend me a new piece of clothing by either Endura, Funkier, Castelli or Altura" and ill get a jacket elsewhere
but jackets are a lot of money so id rather get one from here as my dad is paying part of it

thanks

Castelli Gabba

seriously they are that good!

And yet they've been usurped by the Alpha jacket.

Do you run hot or cold? I get very hot when riding and as much as I love the Rapha sifts hell it was just too hot.

It's got to be very cold get get me beyond a gillet.

good question

during the winter I normally wear around 5 layers of Jerseys (inc my soft shell)

I was thinking getting, well perhaps, more of a thinner one so that I could wear when it gets a little warmer (like this morning when its quite chilly and cold or during autumn and spring as well as winter ?, but then again I have my soft shell (which isn't waterproof)

Being serious, if I were you I'd get a waterproof packable jacket I could use year round. I have the DHB EQ 2.0 or whatever it is called and use this on my commute, but never any other time.

If I ever go out for a proper ride in the winter, I'll layer up to what I wear when I'm warmed up, so usually base, and a winter jersey, castelli windproof or gabba plus arm warmers is my usual combo, then I'll chuck the jacket on over the top, then once I'm warmed up take this off, put it in my back pocket, and It'll come out if it starts to rain.

I use the dhb Minima S, which has been great apart from when my mum boiled it and ruined all the seams, but still use it as it is waterproof even after a couple of years. I was contemplating buying the Galibier race jacket, looks very good value, and clear, so can use if you're racing.

Completely agree with the waterproof packable jacket idea and using layers.

I use a DHB Turbulence jacket for keeping the wind and the rain off and it's pretty awesome. It also easily fits in a pocket so I can just put it on for the very early morning atm if I really need it, or for riding at night. A merino wool base layer for the more early spring/autumn stuff works well too, and also will fold up nicely.

5 layers of Jerseys including a soft shell?!

i think on the coldest days this winter I went with a M200 merino base layer + winter jacket! Do you wear merino base layers? Think you'll find they work really well for layering

The gabba is great - I like them so much I have two. I've heard good things about the alpha jacket, and then there's the likes of the Motirolo & Espresso which will also be good options

I've got the EQ2.5 too and it's great for commuting, I'm still wearing it most mornings. I would use it for other riding in rain over the packable as the packable is very 'boil in the bag'. In changeable weather I generally wear a windproof (semi-water resistant) jersey with waterproof leg warmers and arm warmers. Packable is always with me for any heavy showers.

I have the DHB Commuter too, it's better than the EQ2.5 in heavy constant rain as the weatherproofing is better, does make it slightly less breathable. Main reason I wear the EQ over it is the EQ is high-viz the commuter is Black.

I tried the Nevis II and it was similar quality/waterproofing to the EQ2.5/Commuter but the fit didn't suit me.

From the Castelli jersey I tried I'm not convinced about the Gabba fitting me very well, although I would certainly have one otherwise. I'll prob try the Sportful/Northwave options instead. The Sportful Fiandre range are supposed to be fairly equal to the Gabba for waterproofness.

5 layers sounds crazy now! But it's a different story in the cold!

This winter the most I layered was 4 - base layer, normal jersey, thermal jersey & jacket. Even then temperatures higher than -1 I'd generally overheat. Bear in mind I was also wearing 2 pairs of bib tights (thermal & normal), overshoes, neck gaiter (+over mouth) and skullcap under helmet. Now I have arm warmers I'd probably skip the normal jersey

Most of my commuting gear is cheap DHB stuff, commuting @ 7.15am it's obviously quite low temps. Saw -6 one morning. If leisure riding I wouldn't be out so early meaning temperatures would be around zero, so wouldn't need too much 'thermal' leisure wear (ie stuff I'd wear without jacket).

I've always run quite warm, but I do prefer to overheat & back-off my effort rather than be cold and bury myself struggling to get warm! ;)

well as I bought some merino wool base layers, before I ended up being off the bike for 4 months, I find that along with say a jersey or two along with my Altura night vision windproof jacket (I call it a soft shell) works very well

and I have a packable rain jacket

but I might ditch that and get a high vis version as i use my high vis altura all through winter in ALL light conditions and changing conditions too

so im not really sure what i want, but i do want it high vis !

Living in the tropical zone of the M25 the most I've worn this year is a SS base, SS Jersey, softshell gillet and arm warmers.

Anyway, have you thought of the Rapha Hardshell? I use it when pootling on the hybrid, on the road bike I would boil.

I think the most I've worn when out riding is a base layer, jersey and softshell. I also have bib tights which come quite a way up my torso which helps. Beyond that it's all about gloves, neck warmer, overshoes, skullcap...

I can't imagine riding in 5 layers. I bet you could get hit by a car and just bounce down the road unhurt.

LOL :D

but seriously

I used to wear (before I bought base layer)

s/s and L/s Jerseys with my softshell
I wear bib tights (Roubaix fabric) so keep my belly warm :)
