Hi i've been talking to my uncle who can finally get ADSL (he's in the middle of nowhere).

Can anyone recommend a cheap reliable ADSL provider?
Caps aren't too important, just a reasonable level, maybe 5gb minimum? (he only really uses the internet for share trading, emails and the like).

Preferably one a rolling monthly contract as he only lives over here for about 6 months a year (he has a house here and Aus and alternates between them).

Fast activation would be appreciated as his current dial up provider is having serious troubles.

As for modem router, what would be recommended given
a lowish budget
it should be stable and good with potentially borderline connections (he's in the middle of nowhere).
Preferably be wireless - he'll be using it with laptops.

Thanks :)

If he's in the middle of nowhere does that mean he need a home250 service?

Most isps take 3-5 days as its BT that takes the time and all the isps have to go via them.

If he goes for a monthly contract, then most if not all the isp's would need a 40-70 connection charge everytime he restarted the service

Router wise I have a DG384G which works very well on my slightly dodgy long line. But then it seems everyone has different views/problems with all the router manufactors.. so pot luck it seems tbh

If you put his phone number through the BT Guesstimator ( www.bt.com/broadband ), how fast does it reckon he can go?

UKFSN have some good deals: http://www.ukfsn.org/adsl.html

As for router, Speedtouch 516 (single) or 546 (multi-port) are very good for crappy long lines (from reading ADSLGuide) and they are reasonably priced.

If he can't get a good 512kb service, Zen do a Home250 product for people with really bad lines.

Perhaps NewNet also? http://www.newnet.co.uk/broadband/home_info.php

Zen also do a Lite product now - up to 8Mbps with a 2GB/month "limit" (£1.50 a GB after that), for what it's worth.

cheers :)
I've done a quick check and the BT thingy says up to 8mb (Can't be right:p)

Does anyone have any experience with the Speedtouch 585?
