I have a h100i on my 4770k, but it doesn't really fit into my case very well. I might be upgrading to Ryzen 3 when that comes along but I'll want to go back to air cooling. What cooler can I get now that will work with Ryzen 3? Budget of £50.

If a £50 air cooler will be a significant downgrade from a h100i with Noctua fans, then I could consider a new case, I do hate my current case... If I go this route, is there a bracket for AM4 for the H100i?

Edit - got a 120mm cooler which doesn't fit! changed the title and added a new post. Not really worth it's own thread...

I believe the best cooler in the £50 range is Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140 Power but it's hard to find here in UK. It's rated 360w TDP which is more cooling ability than others with max usually about 320w TDP. It uses a TY-147A that is almost silent below about 1000rpm and becomes audible at about 1050-1100rpm. Probably more cooler than you really need, but using a cooler that has more cooling ability than needed means it never has to work hard/run fan at high speeds so cools with less noise. ;)

I picked up a Silverstone cooler for £25 as it seemed to be excellent for the price based on reviews, pretty close to coolers in the class above. Turns out I failed at the first step, it doesn't fit into my case! I sort of assumed my £100 Bitfenix Pandora Midi ATX case would be able to accommodate a bog standard 120mm cooler but nope... Do you think I will be able to return it, as I opened it?

I've put on an old 92mm Raijintek Adios cooler, which needs elastic bands to hold the fan in place as the metal brackets have lost their own elasticity, and its definitely struggling with the overclock. Currently doing Chrome and Spotify at 40c. Reaching the desktop took it up to 59c. This is with a 140mm input at the front, 120mm Noctua fan from the old radiator up top and a 120mm noctua exhaust, all on the quiet profile in the bios (CPU cooler on standard).

So, new question, is this cooler bad for a 92mm cooler or fairly typical? Am I going to have more success just getting a wide case compared to buying a 92mm cooler... Or I could use the H100i for a bit more and have it squished in the case crushing cables etc :(

Which Silverstone 120mm cooler was it, Stew? Pandora says it fits up to 160mm, so if we know the height of that cooler, then maybe can look for slightly shorter coolers (and maybe still get away with 120mm).

It's a Silverstone sst - ar01. On a z87 sabretooth. The top of the heat pipes touched the side panel of my case. Total height is 159mm.

Tbh this little cooler is doing alright now. ME Andromeda which is CPU heavy isn't going over 55c. Beam.ng (stupid name) is a CPU heavy driving simulation which also didn't go over 55c.

Had a feeling that was the cooler. Yeah bit tall for a 120mm.

The part picking website has a filter for air cooler height and comes up with plenty of options, 120mm included. I tried 156mm filter setting. If you ever need something with more oomph. Still good to check reviews after that to make sure.

There are many coolers 159mm tall or less. Advantage of bigger cooler is they have much more cooling ability than small ones and more cooling ability translates into lower temps at lower fan speeds so less noise.

Alpehnfohn Matterhorn Pure is quite good measuring 134mm wide by 158mm tall by 98mm deep with fan priced at £33.95. Your RAM would need to be no taller than43mm (top of RAM 46mm or less above surface of motherboard).

do they even still make this anymore?
Yes, Thermalright still makes TRUE Spirit 140 Power.

Thermalright has several new coolers out .. actually most are updated versions of existing coolers. Most are a little shorter so will fit into smaller cases.

New models are:
Silver Arrow T8 155x103x158mm (LxWxH) w/ 8x 6mm heatpipes & 600-1800rpm fan rated 320w TDP
Silver Arrow T6 155x103x158mm (LxWxH) w/ 6x 6mm heatpipes & 500-1500rpm fan rated 240w TDP
Macho Rev.C 140x102x158mm w/o fan (LxWxH) w/ 6x 6mm heatpipes & 600-1500rpm fan rated 240w TDP
TA 140 140x42x159mm w/o fan (LxWxH) w/ 5x 6mm heatpipes & 600-1500rpm fan rated 200w TDP
TA 120 120x42x158mm w/o fan (LxWxH) w/ 6x 6mm heatpipes & 600-1800rpm fan rated 200w TDP
Silver Arrow 120x101x130mm (LxWxH) w/ 6x 6mm heatpipes & 600-2500rpm fan rated 240w TDP
AXP-100-Full Copper 108x121x44mm w/o fan (LxWxH) (add 14mm for fan) w/ 6x 6mm heatpipes & 900-2500rpm fan

Silver Arrow 130 is new smaller version of Silver Arrow using a 120mm fan in middle.

Macho Rev. C has finpack set back so front of cooler is only 22mm in front of center of CPU, so front of fan will only be 47-48mm in front of CPU. This is about 3-5mm more room for front fan to clear RAM so should allow a fan on front on almost all motherboards.
