Recommend A Car - £5k to £6k Budget

Hi folks

Girlfriend and I have finally decided to take the plunge and get a new car. We are thinking we are going to have a budget of between £5k and £6k and are looking at a medium sized car, along the lines of a Golf, Astra, Focus etc Just wondering what people recommend for that sort of money? Ideally, car would be just a couple of years old i.e. Lost its initial depreciation. Cheers for any help and if you need any further info, just ask?

This is such a noob question, I really have no idea, what benefits are there to having diesel over petrol, or is there more the other way round?

Thanks for all the replies folks, had a good look round at the weekend but no Golf's really jumped out. Think we are definitely going to go for one though, does anyone have any recommendations on what to llok out for with mark 4 Golfs? Certain models etc

On a side note, my girlfriend and I both quite liked the look of MG ZR's but dont know too much about them or the state the company is in Rover/MG?!? If anyone could provide advice on this either it would be appreciated.
