My girlfriends looking to get a new car fairly soon and after the MK2 MR2 she's after something she feels a little more confident in. Simple specification really. She wants a fairly new, sporty, well equiped and economical (preferably diesel) car for around £5k. So far she's looked at both the MK IV Golf TDI and a much older A3 but both of which seem to be a little out of her price range still for a low milage example. She also like the 206 GTi (which I'e begged her NOT to get). Anyone else got any suggestions?

That's what I suggested to her today. Initially I thought they might be too expensive but I've not had time to check yet. Her initial reaction was "It's a Skoda"

You won't get a Fabia VRS for <£5k I don't think. You would get a "Vanilla" Fabia TDI though.

For 5k & diesel you'll get a Leon, Toledo or Ibiza TDI, an older Golf TDI or GT TDI, Xsara HDI VTR, or something Pug & HDI.

Unless she does 20k+ miles a year, I'd say stick to petrol if she wants good looking and sporty. Probably get a nice Focus 1.6/1.8 for that money?

Thaks for the suggestions. I'll talk to her tonight and see what she says. Didn't think she's get a vRS for much less than £8k and Autotrader has proven it. As regards the MR2....I always thought it was a bit of a hairdressers car to be honest
