Hi,

I'm looking for a recommendation of a decent ADSL2+ modem with an ethernet port. I do not need wireless/routing as I have a Linksys WRT54G which I am very happy with. I am having very hard trouble looking for a modem on its own, all I seem to find are combinations of modem/router/wireless which I would rather not pay the extra for.

I have seen the Linksys ADSL2MUE which is cheap and would suit the job perfect however I have read some very bad things about compatibility between the ADSL2MUE and the WRT54G.

Thanks in advance :)

Concerning adsl2+, the billion 740X series has the best modems as well as good router features. Some of the latest belkin and speedtouch models are highly rated too.

edit: I've just seen you are after a modem only. The ADSL2MUE is not very good for adsl2+ imo.The Speedtouch 510 v6 is supposedto be the best but it has a horrible interface and i'm not sure if it has a bridge mode. check it out.

Yeah I had to dump my Netgear for a speedtouch 585, it achieves more than twice the speed of the netgear.. Seems a lot of people had the same issues with netgear's and ADSL2+, on ADSL it was faultless though.

It seems that many of the early adsl2+ router were just adsl1 routers with revised firmwares and hence were not originally designed to utilise the 2.2Mhz spectrum.

I have an ADSL2MUE, had it for about a year and a half now. I used to use it with a WRT54G but my network grew out of the WRT54G if you know what I mean so that that to be replaced. I now still use the ADSL2MUE with my m0n0wall. I never had a problem with the ADSL2MUE compatibility wise, great modem.

That is unless you are confusing compatibility with ease of setup. When I first tried setting the WRT54G up with it, I would get connected for about 30 seconds after which the connection would drop out without fail. I turned to here for help and soon found the problem was with the way I had set them up. What I had done was to have the modem manage the connection completely, when what I should have done was set the ADSL2MUE's 'Connection type' setting to 'Bridged Mode Only', and set the WRT54G to 'PPPoE' and given it the username and password instead of the ADSL2MUE. I do this with the m0n0wall too - don't think I've tried it the other way and don't see any point in wasting time doing so - it works fine this way and integrates better.

So aside from that I've not had a problem. Just as long as you are aware that you have to do as described above I don't see what compatibility issues there could be.

Hope this helps, null :)

The problem with the ADSL2MUE is that it uses quite an old DSP so you will not get the maximum performance that your line can offer.

I had a belkin 125mbit 4 port + wireless thingy cant remember the full product name.

It was very good router and allowed a CLI tweak to get a better sync speed at silly low SNR ratios.

Before that i had a Speetouch 546, again i found it to be excellent, and there is now a DMT tool that allows you to do the same tweak.

I cant fault Thomspon Speedtouch Routers and modems. They supplied me with my ADSL hardware way back from day 1.

Infact i just baught a 585 for my sister. :D
