Recommend a decent cheap hardware divx player?

I'm not sure if they still do it but about a month ago Aldi were doing a divx dvd player which played virtually everything for £30.

Presumably you need some kind of modded xbox for that kind of thing?

But it works like a treat.
I've got one downstairs and one upstairs and both are accessing my PC's hard drives.
The software on the XBOX looks a bit like Windows Media Centre.

There are plenty of cheap DVD players and most now will play DivX/Xvid, but bear in mind, most are cheap for a reason. I used to work for a company that sold several different brands, some of which had upto 60-70% return rate due to faults.
Umax, Yamada, Cyberhome, Eltax. I would suggest paying a little bit more for a Sony/Toshiba/Samsung, like the Sony DVP-NS36 or Toshiba SD360E.

Or as said maybe modded Xbox.

Philips DVP-5900,
Plays all divx/xvid i've thrown at it and also has HDMI output, upscales DVDs etc to hi def resolutions. I think its a good player and from what i have read on the av forums, others think so too. I got it for about 60 quid from currys..

Sounds like a good idea, but I wouldn't have a clue how to mod one myself, or where to go to get one done. Besides, I'm guessing it wouldn't be worth it, as a used xbox would be around £50 plus what, another £50 or so for the modding?
For that much I may as well spend £100 on a decent hardware divx player.

Cheers, I'll look into that. Sounds like a good deal.

Some reviews on it are mixed. I've a Philips 5100 and its ok. I had to return the first on I got and it had some problems with some divx's. The must have updated the firmware because the second one I got didn't. Doesn't upscale, but I don#'t need that at the moment.
