Recommend a good cheap card for widescreen.

I have recently upgraded my monitor to a tft widescreen with a resolution 1440x900.

Previously my 7600gt was happy to play most games reasonably at 1024 x 768. However it is now struggling with the native res of the tft.

What would be the best cheap card that played games at a reasonable level at that res. I was looking at the x1950xt, anything else I should be considering?

19" Widescreen right?

There's always the 8800GTS 320MB if you can stretch to it, I don't think the lack of memory will hamper it too badly at that resolution.

If you're not keen on that then you're basically looking at the X1950 range - that is the Pro, XT, or have a gander on the MM for an XTX. :)

Yeah, I felt like a complete noob when I was left wondering why my games were running so slowly on my new tft. I had checked out my rig on my mates tft and they ran fine. Only that my mate had the 17" model. The difference between the 17" and the 19" was so small that I went for the 19". Then whilst playing a few games did I realise that I had created an extra 50% of screen real estate for my ageing 7600gt to render. Doh!!

(Still, the 19" model actually cost less than my mates 17" model from 6 months ago - same brand, series, etc. No doubt in another 6 months I could get the 20" or 22" model for the same price...)

And the thing is, you can't reduce the res on a tft, because it looks ruddy awful.
:)

Well the native resolution of a 17/19" 4:3 TFT is 1280x1024.

That's 1,310,720 pixels to render.

Your 19" WS TFT is 1440x900.

That's a total of 1,296,000 pixels.

So, in fact, you should get better, or at least identical performance, on your old screen. If you're seeing a big performance drop moving to 19" WS, there's something wrong there.

[Edit] Or did you run your 17" TFT at 1024x768?

yea he sed 1024 * 768, id say go for second hand, people are selling off their previous gen top of the range cards for new ones, should get a good deal somewhere :P
