Recommend a low cost virtual Linux server

I know there's a server section but that appears more business orientated and about building actual racks. This is more about service options.

I need a very low level cloud service that I can access via SSH/Shell to remotely use Python, do some other command line work and maybe set up a web service for my use only. This is particularly useful as the work network is overly restricted so some basic things are blocked.

I have in the past used LeaseWeb and was paying around £5 a month. This allowed 40GB storage and run Ubuntu.

Can anyone recommend any other services or providers?

Oh and I'm also interested in a VPN so if that's an option or supplied then that's a bonus

Have you tried Fasthosts? They may be able to cater to your needs and I use them for all my hosting needs. UK based, excellent support and uptime. Otherwise, if latency isn't a major issue I'm guessing you'll be able to get something cheaper stateside. I used to use Lunar Pages, but being US based the latency sucked and all support had to be on CET rather than GMT.

OVH/Kimsufi have some fairly cheap VPS/Dedicated server options.

Used a couple of their servers for 12 months or so in the past until I moved to Hetzner for something with a bit more grunt

Even a GNU/Linux virtual machine sounds like it might do. Not really sure what you need.

Another vote for DigitalOcean here. $5 a month for their basic server which is SSD so it's nice and quick.

Plus you can turn servers on and off (take a snapshot before you turn it off) and just use it when you need. The $10 I got initially from their Twitter promotion lasted a good year.

I've used a lot of hosts over the years.

Main place I look for deals is: lowendbox.com

Currently I've got my main VPS with bHost. A new one I've just started trying is Aruba Cloud (they work in the same way as Vultr who I've used before).

Others I've used in the past and would use again if I needed are: ultravps, Rackburst, and INIZ.
