Recommend a multiplayer shooter like COD4 (No BR!)

I am having an itch for some multiplayer FPS gaming. I quite enjoyed COD4 and Black Ops for their fun, quick gunplay as well as their nice levelling system and gun customisation, lack of loot boxes and micropayments. To save buying a new game I thought I'd give them a go again so I fired up my disk based copy of COD4 and saw there were hundreds of populated servers. However when I try to join a few it downloads mods which then crashes my PC and I think they're all cracked or something. I then tried MW2 and this just said 0/0 players online.

I've got PUBG and BF1 and don't have the urge to play it.
It can be WW2 or more modern!

What do you suggest, OCUK?

I ended up trying my old copy of Back Ops on PS3. Got 6,000 people playing TDM still! Good fun.

IIRC for MW2 you have to use a 3rd party lobby system now and last time I had a look it was still infected by a high number of hackers out of the numbers playing

there is also the remastered version of COD4 MP but I've not checked that out.

For the original COD4 you won't be able to just install the disk version and go - you will need the latest patches and possibly update punk buster - not sure the status on that now I suspect a lot of servers don't run with PB any more.
