Hey all, after picking up a controller for the PC I was looking to get a fighting game as I used to quite enjoy them in my old console days. Its been a long time since I played any fighting games so I'm seriously out of practice and was aiming more for the single player side before dipping into online play.

I have seen a couple on steam and was wondering what people think of them with regards to single player and ease of picking up (considering I'm essentially a newbie), or if there are any others I should consider.

Street Fighter IV & the Arcade Edition: One of these would seem the obvious choice but they seem to use GFWL which I'm not a fan of and i hear is shutting down at some point.

Street Fighter X Tekken: Seems to be tons of DLC for and I don't really want to be spending money after I purchase the game.

King of Fighters XIII: Seems interesting but doesn't look overly newbie friendly.

Skullgirls: Dont really know much about it, looks intersting but has a much smaller roster than the others.

Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition: Apart from the spelling making me cringe (am I getting old?) I'm not overly keen on the art style but could overlook it if people think its the best.

Thanks for any help in advance :)

Dont play much fighting games but I would go with either Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter IV

Maybe someone else will give you a better reasoning.

AE, KOF13 and Skullgirls are the best PC fighting games right now. Yatagarasu will be good when it comes out (successful Kickstarter), it's very 3rd Strike inspired.

Don't worry about GFWL. When the next version comes out (Ultra SF4) next year, they're ditching GFWL in favour of Steam.

Skullgirls is fantastic though. You should definitely consider it. The smaller roster isn't really that big of a deal, plus there's 4 more characters being released over the next year. The tutorial is great for learning fighting game fundamentals, the community is awesome and the dev support is probably the best out of any game ever made.

Personally I don't like MK at all. The animations and character feel are too rigid for me.

If you had to buy only one, go with AE. It has the most players and most support in the form of guides, tutorials etc. Plus it has Ibuki who is the best. Some would argue KOF is the "better" game because it's less forgiving and more of a "honest" fighting game, but it's much harder and there's way less players and resources (although enough to learn if you're really dedicated).

All your assumptions are pretty much spot on. Don't worry about GFWL.

Arcade Edition is definitely the one to go for. Still going strong after 4 years with a bright future ahead.
