Hi,

I'm looking to purchase a new PSU for my Sonata II, as I want something a bit more powerful than the supply that comes with the case and also a bit tidier!

I've been looking at the Hiper 580W ATX 2.2 Type R's, as I like the sound of being able to only attach cables to it that i will actually use. Are they quite quiet? And what is the difference between a modular and non-modular PSU?

/n00b ;)

Thanks

Hi semi-pro waster :)

Ah I see, thanks for that, will have a read through.

I'm looking to spend around £70ish, but if necessary I could go a bit further. My PSU at the moment is ok, but a friend mentioned that I should probably get a better one than the Sonata II standard for my system, and I'd rather pay a bit more for really good quality if I have to.

Rest of spec is:

Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
Asus A8N-SLi Premium
2 x 1Gb GeiL Value RAM (New 2 Gb Corsair pair arriving Monday though)
Asus 7900GTX (when I get my replacement!)
3 SATA HDD's
DVD-RW
2 x 120mm fans

Thanks for your help :)

Whats wrong with your current one?
Antec psus are usualy very good, quiet and powerful.
I won't embark on a grand hiper bashing session, but i can reel off a list of reasons not to get one, and that fact it only supplies about 450w is only one of them. Its not particularly quiet either.

Get something from the A-list of psu manfacturers, that is: Antec, Enermax, Seasonic, Fsp, Tagan. Seasonic are the quietest.

My opinion on modular psus is they are pointless, as i use all my cables, but if you don't it might be worth having.

Hi :)

Well to be honest that's part of the reason why i am posting, I don't know a lot about PSU's so I wasn't really sure if the Sonata II standard one was that great or not, I'm just going by what I have been told. I think the Sonata II one is 450W stated, and I just don't want to be in a situation where it isn't enough. If I'm worrying about nothing then please tell me :)

Since posting I've found a couple of threads that are less than complimentary about Hiper's so perhap's another brand would be a better choice. Any further advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT: Just to add, I have quite a few redundant cables in my case from the Antec PSU, which is why I was leaning towards one that would allow removal of such cables.

You are right to be suspicious of psus included with cases, most are rubbish however Antec cases and psus are very good, so if it isn't powerful enough it will just cut out rather than blowing up and destroying components. If it works with your setup, i would keep it until you find you need more power, as it should power that setup fine.

As for modular, if you do a good job of tidying your cables it should be fine. If you think it would be useful to you, by all means get a modular psu when/if you come to upgrade.

Ok, thanks to you all for your advice, will have a think about it over the weekend. If the Antec one will be ok for now then I may wait a while, as I don't intend to upgrade for a while yet.

Cheers :)
