Is there a modern equivalent of the Ultima Underworld games. Controlling a single avatar in a sealed environment? I'm assuming there isn't as Bethesda have changed the market to the open ended, free roaming style.
Only dungeon crawling game that comes to memory was Bethesda's Battlespire.
For myself, from the modern FRPG genre, I prefer the single avatar game instead of party based (regardless of if the other party members are controllable or scripted). As I enjoy making an all powerful hero character who is up to the end objective without having to worry about controlling multiple characters that I probably dislike.
I enjoyed Arena and Daggerfall from The Elder Scrolls series. But I was fed up of the free roaming nature of Morrowind so stuck to the main story line, and house objective. Not brought Oblivion for that reason.
Not read of any other single avatar FRPG. Gothic series looks the same as TES series, but with poorer graphics.

Heck if no-one likes Vampires: Bloodlines after playing it i'll buy it from them.
