Recommend a UPS

I'd recommend a real Smart-UPS rather than the SC models. A SMT1000I or SMT1500I is a decent starting point. Just the excessive recharge times are enough reason to avoid the SCs.

You really need to know what the server load is and how long you want them to be able to run on batteries. You can then use the product selectors on APC's website.

You connect the equipment using hot cold C13 to C14 IEC cables. At least one should come with the UPS.

You're best off buying from an authorised re-seller to avoid any warranty issues.

I'm looking for a UPS for my main server and possibly a small server in addition. Anyone got any experience of this device: http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SC1500I&total_watts=50

How exactly do you fit the power plug from the server into it? Is it surge protected?

As it says on the page, yes it's surge protected to 445J. For the power cable you just use a standard female to male kettle lead.

Measure power consumption to determine which ups is best. In terms of run time a battery and inverter are going to be much much cheaper than any ups though.

Thanks for the info. I only really need a short run time, a few mins.

I was hoping to get a small rack mountable one. Those dont look like they can?
