A friend of mine wants to create a simple website to:-
a) Just have a landing page with his details
b) To allow his photos to be displayed

Obviously the photo gallery would need a web application to allow them to be shown and administered.

Can anyone recommend a simple way to achieve this? ie: To allow a nice simple gallery to be created and maintained with a simple yet attractive interface?

One of their products for the gallery? http://www.simpleviewer.net/products/

The free ones work fine, paid for just add some extra flexibility. Simple interface.

I use simple viewer for my gallery pages: http://conalthomson.ie/recent/recent.html
and just added some custom HTML at the top for alternative links

- So is the version you're using there the free or pro version?
- How did you can the link in across the top? I assume that's a manual effort of amending HTML or PHP or something rather than thru an Administration program?
- Looking at the source, what dictates to the java applet the photos to show for the page in question?
- Do you use the SVBuilder PC application to publish? Is that easy/friendly? I assume it does all the resizing for you?

I also use SimpleViewer (Click sig). However you will need to have some simple HTML knowledge to get it set up nicely.

I've also used PixelPost. This is much much easier to add photos and configure. It's a much easier all in one solution.

Thanks for the reply.

You recon PixelPost is a more straight forward solution? Even though you need MySQL etc etc?

Why do you use SimpleViewer then? Also, I notice on your site, you don't have a link to SimpleViewer in the bottom right? Is that because you've bought the pro version?

I was thinking of something more self contained and configurable?

eg: http://www.tinywebgallery.com

Fickr API you can do what you want, but then you did say simple and a landing page. Going for a full install of photo management site seems a bit OTT for a "simple" site (considering on going updates, maintenance of databases etc...).

I guess it depends on what simple really means - simple for a end user visitiing the site, or simple for the administrator / uploader...

It's done through 500px. You sign up, upload pictures. You can totally ignore the social part of it and just select the portfolio template and off you go.

You can only upload 20 pictures per week on the free account. Some templates require you to have the upgraded account.

Yes I do think PixelPost is more straight forward. Setting up a MySQL DB isn't that hard compared to designing and coding your own site around SimpleViewer. Most web hosts include an easy installer for PixelPost anyway (Softaculous).

I use SimpleViewer because themeing PixelPost was more long-winded IMO. PixelPost does have many ready made beautiful skins, but if you want to design your own layout, it's easier to work around SimpleViewer.

Also, PixelPost has a great web based back-end for making photo management very very easy. With Simpleviewer, you need to do it manually, but saying that It's not hard or anything.

And yes, I have paid for SimpleViewer Pro mate, which Is why there's no link.

OK! Any cheap hosting company in particular you'd recommend? I've seen one asking just $2.49 a month, including unlimited use and a domain! Which seems very good!?

Aha! Is it free? So we could basically knock up something akin to your www.hcanning.co.uk with a free 500px account?

And then how do you front it with your own domain? How tricky is that bit?
There is a free element but you can only upload so many photos per week, and you don't get access to all the 'website' themes, and a few other things.
It's $50/year otherwise. Hardly wallet-busting :)

500px provide the feature of linking your domain to it; just point the DNS records to their IP address.
