So my Sky router has given up after 7 years, and Sky have told me that as so many people were getting free replacements they won't give me a free one and want £35 off me. Not bad for 7 years worth of bills.

I do however have another router (a Zyxel Prestige 662HW-61) which I would like to get up and running as it has an aerial and is an expensive bit of kit so should be much better signal.

Sky do not release the passwords to allow you to use a 3rd party router, so I was wondering if anyone knows of an ISP that does.

Also, I did try the Sky password generator site, but it only gave me a username and password, yet the Zyxel router is asking for a system password, username and another password. Does anyone know what the 3rd password should be or how to get it, or even if another ISP will be able to provide me with all of these details.

Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry for the long post.

System password sounds like the admin password that has been assigned to the router. It isn't anything to do with the ADSL connection.

Most routers will have a default admin username and password that you can find out. Try those. If its been reset to something else you should be able to factory reset if it has one of those recessed buttons. Then configure the router to connect to Sky.

Sky requires just the ADSL username and password.

The new router is supposed to be half decent though. If you fail to get your router working then it's not really all that much to pay and Sky LLU is pretty decent as ISPs go.

I'd argue long and hard and not give up for a free router. If you were to cancel and resign up you'd get one...

I've been there and got nowhere. I eventually found the password/username generator by which time I'd cooled down and decided not to follow through with my original plan to cancel just because I was so angry.

Assuming you mean the dg834gt then just log in and backup the settings. File is stored in pain text, as is the password.

If you cant get in it gets difficult.

Cancel and resign up then! Use a dongle for a month....and tell them that's what you are going to do because they will give you a free router then...
I'd be tempted that as they won't give you a router to get them to give out the required information. If they refuse tell them they are breaking their side of the contract for failing to provide a service as they won't allow you to connect...they really have no option!
