Recommend Gaming Headphones

Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone, much appreciated for the detailed reviews.

For the optimum quality headphone for gaming in your price range, i stand by my earlier recommendation of the AKG K701. Its newer varient the Q701 is said by some to be even better, making up for the K's light lower end. An interesting alternative might be the HiFiman HE400 (about £250), which from reviews sounds like a real possibility. I'm beginning to think they might be my next pair.

From the reviews i read about the AKG 701( not sure if there is a difference with the AKG K -701 on the website you stated), that it lacks base and can be rather flat and that the Sen HD 605 have more base. Has this been rectified in this newer version you mentioned? also i cant seem to find the HiFiman HE400 for less than £400:eek:.

The Essence STX would indeed do the job. Or the Fiio E9 is good option (£70). Maintain a bit of schepticism when reading the recommendations of the audiophile enthusiasts. If you end up getting into the hobby, buy an expensive amp/dac later. In the mean time you will get the vast majority of the benefit from the headphones.

ok when you mention the Essense STX, you mean

or this

They have the same specs but different branding name??

also any point in buying the Asus ROG Xonar Phoebus 7.1 PCI-E Soundcard??

many years ago, i bought a Bose surround sound system, with 4 x 50w speakers(i think) and a big sub woofer, it came with some old school VHS like amplifier, i was wondering would I be able to use that as an amp?

this is the amplifier I have, its a Nad c320

The other pair of headphones i was considering was the Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro 250 OHM. The headband on these looks much better out of the box.

will look into this, so many options, reviews going both for and against. Cant help but feel confused:confused:

thanks all

I think the only real difference is the STX is the PCI express version while the ST is just plain old PCI

Thank for that, i am blind:o

For the best sound quality in games within budget get these:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/akg_k701.htm (best price).

Plus a Xonar DG for headphone amp and Dolby Headphone, plus a desktop or clip on mic.

how about the AKG K 702? i can get them for £220?

The only difference between the 701 and 702 is the colour and that the 702 has a removable cable. I dont thnk its worth the extra. The Thomann site i linked sells the 701 for £170 which is the lowest price I have seen for it.

The HE400 can be bought from the Head direct website (American). They are the same company that make the Hifiman brand. Bought directly from them they are $400, which including the import is maybe £300. Bought from a UK supplier they are going to be more. The AKG models are also substantially more expensive in this country (which is why I linked a German seller). Its also worth looking at Headroom who have b-stock deals on these headphones (there are some HE400 for $330 atm).

The K701 is a headphone for surround sound gaming bc of its emphasis on sound stage and accuracy: ie you can tell precisely where every bullet is coming from. It is also brilliant for classical music. It isnt ideal though if you want more lower end in your music, or indeed if you like base thump in your films/games for explosions etc. It represents extreme clarity.

The HE400 interests me because from what I have heard it keeps this level of clarity, but introduces some more low end. The combination is quite unusual. I suspect the Q701 lies in between the two.

If you want something more 'fun' for gaming, maybe the Beyerdynamic DT990 might be a possibility. All of these (except the HE400) are discussed in the massive mad lust thread though, so that is probably your best resource.
